Two pieces for guitar

Taxco Catedral
Both works were inspired by beautiful cities in America and Europe. Taxco Cathedral, also named Santa Prisca, is located
at the state of Guerrero, Mexico. Built in the year 1759, this majestic, pink-stoned, colonial styled church shows a typical
churrigueresca facade.
Having the goal to get closer to the religious and spiritual character of this ancient Cathedral, I decided to mesh medieval
and contemporary sounds. On the other hand, having composed this piece almost totally within a graphic writing, it gave
me the flexibility of getting inside these old musics, so intimately related to the imposing temple.
Through the running of the piece, we will hear sounds simulating or evoking church bells, Gregorian Chants, indigenous
melodies, the horns of automobiles cruising nearside the Cathedral, even touches of Flamenco music that can be
identified with the churrigueresco style of the old building. I would like to point out that this work was written to honor the
Cathedral and the International Guitar Festival, directed by Juan Carlos Laguna. The piece is dedicated to Chilean
guitarist, Carlos Antonio Prez.
Perugia
The city of Perugia, like Taxco, is built on the tops of hills. In Perugias instance, it elegantly descends toward the Tiber
Valley. Its beautiful urban helmet, identified by a nucleus of Etruscan origin, is encased by medieval walls. The piece I
present to you, a solo for guitar, like the citys architecture, is characterized by frequent and sudden contrasts. It is
dedicated to Leonardo de Angelis, a current Professor at the Conservatory of Perugia.

Dos piezas para guitarra

La Catedral de Taxco
Ambas piezas fueron inspiradas en dos bellas y antiguas ciudades de Amrica y Europa. La Catedral de Taxco (tambin
Catedral de Santa Prisca) se encuentra en el estado de Guerrero, Mxico; data del ao 1759. Esta majestuosa iglesia
rosada del perodo colonial presenta una fachada tpicamente churrigueresca.
Con el fin de acercarme al carcter religioso y espiritualista que tiene esta antigua catedral, decid entremezclar
sonoridades que nos sugieren msicas medievales, con otras ms a tono con nuestros tiempos. Por otra parte, compuse
esta pieza casi en su totalidad, dentro de una escritura grfica, la cual me permiti una mayor flexibilidad para adentrarme
a estas viejas msicas que estn tan relacionadas con este majestuoso templo.
Dentro del transcurso de la pieza, escucharemos sonoridades que simulan y otras que evocan campanas de iglesia,
cantos gregorianos, melodas indgenas, el claxon de los carros que transitan por los alrededores de la Catedral y hasta
toques flamencos que pretenden identificar el estilo churrigueresco de la antigua edificacin. Por ltimo, quiero sealar
que esta obra fue escrita en homenaje a la Catedral y al Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Taxco, que dirige Juan
Carlos Laguna. La obra est dedicada al guitarrista chileno Carlos Antonio Prez.
Perugia
La ciudad de Perugia en Italia, al igual que la de Taxco, estn construidas encima de unas colinas. En el caso de Perugia,
sta desciende elegantemente hacia el valle del tber. Su hermoso casco urbano se caracteriza por un ncleo de origen
etrusco, englobado a su vez por una fortificacin o muralla de poca medieval.
La pieza para guitarra sola que les presento, al igual que la arquitectura de la ciudad, se caracteriza por sus frecuentes y
sbitos contrastes. Est dedicada a Leonardo de Angelis, actual profesor del Conservatorio de Perugia.
