Lesson Objective(s):
After reviewing as a class how to create a persuasive essay for the STAAR in pairs the students
will be able to create an outline of an essay in order to enhance their persuasive writing skills and
preparedness for on-demand assessments.
Resources/Materials:
A. TO DO Before the day of the lesson:
Make copies of STAAR essay box, STAAR prompt, and outline for persuasive essay
B. For the lesson itself:
Have handouts ready to pass out to students
Make sure students have their iPads available and ready to use
TEKS/SEs Addressed in the Lesson:
(16) Writing/Persuasive Texts. Students write persuasive texts to influence the attitudes or actions of a specific audience on specific issues. Students are expected to write an argumentative
essay to the appropriate audience that includes:
(A) a clear thesis or position based on logical reasons supported by precise and relevant evidence;
(B) consideration of the whole range of information and views on the topic and accurate and
honest representation of these views (i.e., in the author's own words and not out of context);
(C) counter-arguments based on evidence to anticipate and address objections;
(D) an organizing structure appropriate to the purpose, audience, and context;

(E) an analysis of the relative value of specific data, facts, and ideas; and

Steps in Lesson:
ENGAGEMENT
5-7 minutes:
As a class we will discuss what we already know about writing persuasive essays for STAAR
since this will be review for the students.
STATED OBJECTIVE
Today were going to do a review as a class on how to write a persuasive essay for our STAAR
exam. We will be following an outline to guide us through the writing process and you will
share your outline with the class.
ACTIVE LEARNING
35 minutes:
As a class we will read the prompt and ask the class What is the prompt asking me to do?
Students will then answer this question on their outline.
Next we will review the essay checklist which goes over what students should be focusing on
while they prepare themselves for their essay. The checklist includes: Creative hook, thesis,
specific example, in-depth evidence, real world examples, personal examples, avoid formulaic
transitions and structure, put concession/rebuttal in conclusion, break into paragraphs and in-

dent, take time to reread, all sentences need to tie back to thesis, write small and clear. Students will have prior knowledge to this checklist so an extensive review is not necessary.
Students will now break into pairs where where each group will create an outline of an essay.
The outline will include students dividing their ideas for a persuasive essay into parts. The first
section is the I. Introduction where they will write down the opening idea and the thesis statement. II. Body Paragraph: in this section they will list their main point and specific evidence
to support. III Body Paragraph (with concession): they will need to include their main point
and specific evidence to support. IV. Conclusion: final idea
CLOSURE
10 minutes: Each pair will receive a large sheet of paper where they will write down their ideas
from their outline and present it to the class.
Modifications/Differentiation Strategies:
No modifications are necessary.
Evaluation Strategies:
Students will be evaluated through their participation in group work and their class presentations
for their ideas from the outline.
Notes/Recommendations for Next Time:

Ask students more questions as they are working on their assignment.


Check for understanding after explaining the directions to the lesson
Engage students in general conversation (recommended by Mr. Bergen)
