Single/Multi-Day Lesson:
Single Day Lesson

I. DESCRIPTION OF CONTENT & CONTENT TYPE (Fact, Procedure, Concept, or Principle):

Students recognize the shapes, even when placed in different positions. (Procedure)
II. LEARNING OUTCOME (Objective):
The student will describe objects in the environment using different names of shapes.
III. CURRICULUM CONNECTION (How lesson fits into larger unit sequence):
This lesson comes after students learned to classify objects and count the number of objects in each
category.
IV. INSTRUCTION
A. ENGAGEMENT (Motivational Activities): After reading the book, The Shape of Things, by
Dayle Ann Dodds, students will read sight words in context while building math vocabulary related
to the names and properties of the shapes mentioned in the book.
B. INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE (Teaching Methodology with Student Activities):
C. Step #1: Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes.
a. Look around the classroom, and tell me what shapes you see in the classroom?
b. Students will orally respond individually and will look around classroom and point out what
shape he/she sees in the classroom. Example: box of tissue= rectangle
Step #2: Describe the relative positions of these objects.
a. What shape do you see? (Holding a rectangular box of tissues.)
b. Students will respond that he/she sees a rectangle.
Step #3 : Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size
a. What shape do you see?(Holding up an upside down flash card of a triangle)
*Note: Use CTRL + TAB for indents in outline format.

b. Students will recognize that no matter the orientation of the upside down triangle, the shape
is still the same no matter the way it lays.
D. APPLICATION ACTIVITY (Practice and/or Reflection): Students will identify shapes
regardless their orientation and will be able to identify their dimension on a shape worksheet.
E. MATERIALS & RESOURCES: What do you need for the lesson? Make a list.
a. Book : The Shape of Things by Dayle Ann Dodds
b. Shape flash cards
c. Blank paper and pencils
d. Shape worksheets
e. Shaped objects in the classroom (tissue box, triangle, etc)
V. ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES (Methods for Obtaining Evidence of Learning):
Formative: Listen to children as they respond to a series of questions from the teacher. Circulate the
classroom and observe as students work on their journals.
Summative: In their journals, students will identify and draw various shapes.(Closure)
VI. ACCOMMODATIONS FOR INDIVIDUAL LEARNERS (CONTENT, INSTRUCTION, and
PRACTICE):
Oral Language
Have students work in groups and pairs (high achievers w/peers who may struggle.)
Visuals
Vocabulary Chart
Hands on activities
VII. HOMEWORK (IF APPROPRIATE): No homework assigned.

*Note: Use CTRL + TAB for indents in outline format.
