Next Generation Science Standards

After reading these science documents I learned that the Framework outlines provide our
students with a context for the content of science, the way science knowledge is acquired and
understood, as well as how the sciences are connected through concepts that have universal
meaning across the disciplines. As a future teacher, we are responsible in helping develop our
students thinking, and getting them to connect everything to the outside world. For example, in
the third grade standards I was able to learn about the science topics students will learn. Students
would have to be able to demonstrate an understanding of topics regarding Life Cycles and
Traits, Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems, and Weather and Climate, just to name a few
topics.
The way my science classes and field classrooms have prepared me for teaching, is not
only by teaching strategies on how to engage children into a topic but also by forcing me to ask
questions. Im usually the very shy student, who tries to hide in the back, however, in my
education classes Ive learned that one must speak out when feeling lost. Asking questions is one
thing that has prepared me for the teaching field. I remember physics, last semester was kicking
my butt, and by talking to both my lecture and lab professors, I was able to pass physics with a
B. I want to be able to give my students that comfort to ask questions when they are feeling lost,
whether its in science or any other subject.
I can say I feel prepared in life science because we learn about living organisms. I find
birth, growth, reproduction and death something very fascinating. I believe that the topic of the
life cycle is interesting to many. Plus, students find science interesting, especially because our
generation of children will see the way science will continue to evolve even more. However, one
topic I find myself to be less prepared with would be anything that is physics related. The reason

I feel this topic is my weakness is because I struggled to understand topics such as motion,
balance and unbalance. I found it very challenging to have to predict and prove why things are
the way they are, having to take measurements and calculate my way to the answer. However, I
believe Ill be able to overcome this weakness by finding textbooks or other strategies to
reinforce my knowledge in science overall.
The samples I planned on sharing on my portfolio are some lab activities I did during
physics, as well as two videos based on two experiments I did for extra credit in my physics
class. The way these samples will demonstrate my knowledge or learning in science is because I
had to explain my lab experiments step by step. I literally had to write every little detail down,
which helped me understand the purpose of the experiment and be able to understand the
purpose of the lab.
