Introduction
All things are made up of very small particles called molecules. Molecules are so small that a
single drop of water has around 10,000,000,000,000,000 single water molecules! Molecules can
have different properties, which determine how different types of molecules will or will not
interact. Molecules that do interact may interact by mixing with each other or by reacting with
each other to create brand new molecules. In this lesson, we will test the interaction between the
molecules in water, oil, food coloring, and fizzy tablets. We will then use our new knowledge
about molecular interactions to build our very own lava lamps!
As you and your team of scientists test for interactions, use this worksheet to keep track of your
observations:
Do these molecules interact?
(Yes or no?)
(Mixing or reaction?)

4. Add about 7-8 drops of food coloring. Be sure to make the water fairly dark in color.
Allow the food coloring to penetrate to the bottom. Explain what is happening and why
you think this is happening.

6. Drop one of the pieces of Alka-Seltzer into the oil and water mixture. Explain what is
happening.

7. Once the bubbling stops, add a piece of Ant-acid. Do you get the same effect as the AlkaSeltzer? Explain your conclusion.

8. When you have used up all 4 pieces of the Alka-Seltzer and the bubbling has completely
stopped, place the bottle cap on and tighten it. Tip the bottle back and forth and watch
what happens. Explain what is happening.
