The Reflection
As the semester finishes, looking back at my portfolio I can say that I have learned to
become a better writer. I have grown by using a more complex style of writing then when I did
when I first started this semester. To begin, my vocabulary has transformed. I no longer try to use
common words, or everyday words that are exiting my mouth. Throughout essays I try to
incorporate a variety of words that create a certain tone or a way of persuasion. Words I input
into my essays are less broad making my writing seems specific, unlike word used to generalize.
Using more complex words has helped me structure my sentence better. I have learned to
express an idea in many forms, rather than just putting that idea into one big sentence. After
attending many visits to the LCR, I have noticed that I had many run on sentences and needed
punctuations, or transition words to separate these sentences. Including these things into my
writing I have learned that it makes a great essay introducing ideas, stating counter arguments
and making the essay seem stronger. Reviewing my essay of 1984, I have witness the changed
in my writing, resulting in good feedback from the professor.
Throughout the 3 different projects in this class, I have noticed that my Work Cited page
has progressed. From the first assignment, project web, I did notice that I did not do a good job
in citing my sources. The MLA citation format seemed hard to me, resulting in negative
comments on my work cited page. When I did not know how to cite articles from a website with
incomplete citation information I was confused and I would copy the URL to show where I got
information from. Contrasting with project text, dealing with novel 1984 I have learned that I
actually tried to make the effort to get to the MLA citation format rather than just being clueless

and leaving the URL. I have learned in general to strive for more. I noticed that Ive learned to
get to the point faster. Reviewing drafts and revising work helps a lot. Bettering small things can
make a huge impact on my work in writing.
Due to the fact that I have learned so much in this class, but not only writing, I can apply
what I learned to other courses. To begin, I have learned to write a paper with a good thesis and
essay applying to topics. In other courses throughout the college life, I will have to write many
essays, especially because of my decision to major in criminology. I can think like a writer and
apply the knowledge of theories like Marxism to my writing. Similar to the philosopher of
Marxism, we have learned of the great philosopher named Foucault. Foucaults ideas were to
consider the question of why? Throughout project text, using novel 1984 and Foucaults
Panopticism I have learned to view things from a different perspective. I have learned to be open
minded. Throughout life there will be tings we dont know and will be curious to learn about. It
is good to question things like Foucault to be aware of our surroundings; questioning things
always lead to an answer which ultimately leads to greater knowledge. Including Foucaults idea
into question in my sociology class can help with connecting the motives behind what people do.
With questioning things, this class also has taught me to look up research that is scholarly and
creditable. Again, throughout college there will be essays to write. Essays require research as an
example to back up the main idea. In general everything in this class learned can and will apply
to my other courses and the outside world.
Within this writing semester, I have grown as a writer but I am still at the level where I
want to be. I am at a level of writing where I know I can better things. One thing I can improve
on is expressing my ideas. I express many ideas within my writing but sometimes all those ideas
are not clear enough. Being unable to express an idea has creating many misunderstandings in
my writing. When working on project text, picking Alfred to focus on I had trouble trying to

prove a point, causing my sentences to seem long, losing the main idea throughout the way. My
writing can improve by separating ideas. Before beginning to separate the ideas I think I need to
break down the prompt. Throughout this class there have been many times where I didnt
understand the prompt, including all three prompts from each project and I would need to re
read it or ask the teacher to clarify the prompt. In order to be a good writer I first must
understand what the task is then gather evidence and sources and outline my ideas of what I am
going to write. Understanding whats needed and improving punctuations and sentence structure
might seem like something small but a change like that will improve my writing and over time
with practice my writing with develop into the way I would like, professional and correct.
