Lesson Cycle
Lesson Title/Topic: Substitution method
Target Concept: Using the different methods to solve system of equations. Day 3.
Standards/Rationale: 111.33.b.3 (B)
Lesson Objectives:

Assessment:

The student will apply the substitution

method to solve systems of equations on a
worksheet with 75% accuracy

The worksheet

Materials: Paper, Scissors, Dry erase markers and boards

Lesson Cycle: (Direct instruction)
The teacher will:
Focus/Mental Set:
Instruct the students to write one
equation with two unknowns on two
sheets of paper. Then trade one of the
papers with a partner.
Tell the students to solve their own
equations with methods from previous
lessons.
Help students think of problems if
necessary. Check periodically to ensue
student accuracy.
Have the students create a booklet
labeled Substitution Method when
finished.
Teacher Input:

The student will:

Describe the substitution method

1. Isolate a variable
Ex. 3X+2Y=12
X+4Y=14
EX.2X-2Y-Z=0
8X+2Z=0
4X+2Y+Z=-2

Activity
Have the students pick 1 of 3 colors.
Create an equation from the colors they
chose in rows. This will be the final
example.
Demonstrate isolating using the
students

2. Substitute the variable.

Demonstrate substitution using the

students
3. Solve the 1st equation
4. Solve the 2nd equation

Pick red, blue, or green and write it on

the back of their booklet.
Follow the instructions from teacher.
Providing input along the way.

Write the 2nd step on the 2nd page,

with examples
Follow the instructions from teacher.
Providing input along the way.
Write the 3rd step on the 3rd page, with
examples
Write the 4th step on the 4th page, with
examples

Guided Practice:

Pass out dry erase boards and markers

Write examples on the board for
students to solve

Solve the examples on their dry erase

boards
Lift the board up when solved

Independent Practice:
Worksheet attached (labeled
Independent_Practice)
Hand out the independent practice
worksheet.
Instruct the students that the worksheet
should be completed for homework and
is due by next class.
Closure:
Have students solve the equations from
the beginning of class with their partner
using the new method
