May Spelling Activities and Writing Prompts

Spelling Choices: Your child may choose any three activities to complete, but must turn
in all work for evidence of success. Please be sure that all work is neat and completed
on first grade handwriting paper.
Rainbow Words: Use crayons or markers to write your spelling words in beautiful colors
ABC Order: Put your words in ABC order with the help of an adult

Writing Prompts: Your child may choose any writing prompt of his/her
choice. Students cannot use the same prompt twice.
Please be sure they use first grade handwriting paper, capital letters, and
ending punctuation where appropriate. Students will use their chosen
prompt to begin their first sentence.

Write and Highlight: Write your words. Highlight the vowels in one color and the
consonants in another.

If I was to start my own business I would

Sort: Look at your words and find a way to sort them. Put them in groups. Make sure
every word belongs in a group!

My favorite book is

Backwards Words: First write your words in a list. Then write all of your words
backwards.

The best part of being in first grade was

Write a sentence: Write a sentence for each of your words. Be sure to include capital
letters and punctuation.

This year I learned

Draw a picture: Write your words and draw a picture for each one. Color your pictures
when youre finished.

This summer I plan to

Color Pencils: Write all of your words using color pencils.

The best color in the world is __________________ because

Times Three: Write all of your spelling words three times each.
Count and Total: Write your words. Underline the consonants and circle the vowels. Now
count them How many vowels do you have? How many consonants? Are there more
vowels or more consonants?
Funky Letters: Write your words using funky letters of your choice (for example: bubble
letters, squiggly letters, swirly letters). Make them as fun as possible!

If flowers could talk, they would

I love it when
I am excited for second grade because

Write a letter: Write a letter to a friend using as many of your spelling words as you
can.
Search and Find: Write your spelling words in a list. Choose your favorite book and read
through it. Put a tally mark next to your spelling words any time you see one in the
book.
