Everything is an Argument:

Invitational Arguments- Such arguments are interested in inviting others to join in mutual
exploration based on respect.

Rogerian Argument- approaches audiences in nonthreatening ways, finding common ground


and establishing trust among those who disagree about issues.

Argument to make decisions

Forensic arguments- common in business, government and academia.


Occasions for an argument
1. Past- Forensic- What happened in the past?- Court decisions, legal briefs, legislative
hearings, Investigative reports, academic studies
2. Future- Deliberative- What should be done in the future?- White papers, Proposals, bills,
regulations, mandates
3. Present- Epideictic- Who or what deserves praise or blame?- Eulogies,graduation,
speeches, inaugural address roasts
