Budget Differences of Police Departments of Utah

I am comparing the differences of three police department seeing how much they differ in
budget, police officers that work for the departments and the incline and or decline of the budget
they have to be able to run. I also want to see how much they get from grants from federal
government and state. I will also show the overtime they put in and see if there is any way of
budget cuts to put more into elsewhere.
The information that I have collected can determine the mean of how much all three
departments get and the difference of each department. I will be using quantitative reasoning to
show that decline and incline of spending in each department where they have saved and the
police to public ratio.
Lets talk about Lehi police department first. We can now see what exactly there spending
budget. So in 2011 they receive a budget of 4,781,446 dollars. Which for the city of Lehi as a
population of 35,042 civilians and only having 40 officers of the departments. Which are about
876 people per officer which is way underhand. They spend about 227,513 dollars in overtime
which this is where we can decide to start hiring part time and fulltime officers to decrease that
overtime cost and have more money for their three year plans for the future. If we go ahead and
look at the spending of money between 2011 and 2014 as shown in quantitative reasoning that
we can get the percentage of rise which is 12 % increase. For the overtime that they have paid
between 2011 and 2014 also showed an incline of 18 %. Although the population has increase to
51,173 people since 2011.
For the next police department that we are looking at is Draper City Utah. They have a
population of 43,280 in 2011 and increased by 4% to 45,285. Which they have 40 police officers
on Duty which is about which the mean of the police officer to the population is about 1,107 per
officer. The budget for the draper police department from 2011 is $7,969,995 and increased to
$8,790,740 in 2014 which increased by 9%. Draper city police department has received federal
and state grants. The federal grant was in the amount of 17,227 in 2011 and 10,285 in 2012 and
20,000 in 2013. There was no specified amount for 2014. For the state grants there was a huge
difference compared to the federal grants. For 2011 state granted Draper city 58,744 and in 2012
50,219 and 40,000 in 2013 and there was nothing specified for 2014. These grants are just for the
public safety division of law enforcement.
Lastly before we compare all three departments to see the differences we talk about Salt
Lake City Police Department. We start with their budget which is at 2011 they had the amount to
Spend of 55,169,063. It has increased by 55,855,165 which is a 1.22% increase since 2014. They
have about 585 officers to a population of 191,180 in the Salt Lake City area which is about is
about 326 civilians per officer. There state grant that they receive is about the average of 120,000
per year. There was not information that I could find about the federal grant that they receive.

To compare the difference about the budget between the three police departments really
shows that the Salt Lake City police have a bigger budget because of the needed officers and the
amount of people. Which can say that the amount of people that they can have on the force can
determine that their over time cost are low and can keep that budget down. Unlike Lehi who has
a significantly low budget compare to Salt Lake City police department and have a high overtime
cost of its officers because they have such a low number of officers to people ratio. With Draper
police department and Lehi the amount of people and differs only 27% difference in population
but yet Draper have 38% more of a budget then Lehi city does. Plus Draper gets more state grant
then Lehi city does which raises question about why that is so. The state and federal grants for
Salt Lake City are really high but defiantly think they can be split between different cities.
To sum up everything is that by using quantitative reasoning is that I can see that there is
an increase in budget over the years and has showed me how to calculate that difference between
all three of them and how to get the correct percentage difference of them also. To show this I
have also learned how to use and make charts to also see the difference and how they change
over time. So in all quantitative reasoning can be used in everyday life.
