Core Course Performance Objectives:
1. Apply learning and reading strategies needed to decode professional and academic texts.

2. Analyze and interpret college-level and professional vocabulary, technical text, non-technical
text, and fiction from diverse sources using critical reading and thinking strategies. (1, 2, 5)
3. Compose well-structured essays and written responses to texts. (1, 2, 3, 5)

Measurable Performance Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student will:
1.Apply learning and reading strategies needed to decode professional and academic texts.
1.1 Survey and predict content.
1.2 Employ various strategies to identify, comprehend, and organize information from texts.
1.3 Paraphrase and summarize texts.
2.Analyze and interpret college-level and professional vocabulary, technical text, non-technical text,
and fiction from diverse sources using critical reading and thinking strategies.
2.1 Use college-level and professional vocabulary through use of reference materials,
context cues, and other strategies.
2.2 Identify and evaluate rhetorical elements such as details, organization, and use of
language.
2.3 Analyze and/or interpret audience, purpose, connotation, and tone in texts.
2.4 Evaluate assumptions, biases, value judgments, and worldviews of both the reader and
the author.
2.5 Evaluate arguments by judging sources, evidence, and logic.
3.Compose well-structured essays and written responses to texts.
3.1 Determine suitable audience, purpose, voice, and rhetorical mode.
3.2 Organize ideas in preparation for writing.
3.3 Develop and support an original thesis.
3.4 Edit and revise documents to communicate clearly and effectively.
Evaluation Criteria/Policies:
Students will demonstrate proficiency on all Core Course Performance Objectives at least to the
75 percent level to successfully complete the course. The grade will be determined using the
College Grading System:
