Asthma Overview
Asthma Overview
Asthma is one of the main health care problems seen in the western world that is increasing in prevalence.
Asthma has been characterized as a complex interaction of airway obstruction, bronchial hyper responsiveness with
underlying inflammation.
Signs and symptoms of an asthma attack could include expiratory wheezing, nonproductive coughing,
shortness of breath, pain, chest tightness, prolonged expiration, tachycardia, dyspnea and tachypnea.
Asthma affects all ages and about half of all cases are identified in early childhood and another 30% being identified
before age 40.
Burden of Asthma
on the US
According to the U. S Census bureau, asthma affects more than 22
million people in the United States and has become a major global
health problem affecting more than 300 million people worldwide
The burden of asthma on the economy is not far-fetched, from
monetary loss due to rising hospitalization to increase number of
asthma prevalence.
Treatment and research has not been able to find a cure or means to
prevent asthma incidence.
Asthma cost in the US grew from about $53billion in 2002 to about
$56 billion in 2007, about a 6% increase
