ACTFL STANDARDS
1.2: Learners understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a
variety of topics.
1.3: Learners present information, concepts, and ideas to inform, explain, persuade, and
narrate on a variety of topics using appropriate media and adapting to various audiences
of listeners, readers, or viewers.
3.1: Learners build, reinforce, and expand their knowledge of other disciplines while
using the language to develop critical thinking and to solve problems creatively.
4.2: Learners use the language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the concept of
culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.
Context (How does it fit into the unit/curriculum?)
This would be the second lesson about the games. The previous lesson gave a brief look
into the background of the Colosseum and this one would focus on the gladiators
themselves.

lesson I would have the students tell me what
they remember from the previous lesson about
the Colosseum. After this I would have the
students think about whether or not they
would want to be a Roman gladiator. I would
have the class raise their hands to show
whether they wanted to be a gladiator or not. I
would also have the students justify why or
why they would not want to be a gladiator.
After having the students think about being a
gladiator I would read for them the book,

10-15 mins

1.2

"You wouldn't want to be a Roman Gladiator!:

Gory Things You'd Rather Not Know". While
reading the book I will take the time to answer
questions and explains things further as
needed.

Their activity for this lesson would be to write 5 mins

or illustrate their own story of being a
gladiator or going to the Colosseum. The
students will have the choice to write a story,
a poem, a song, a book, etc. The students will
have a couple days to work on this and can
use the book as a guide for information about
the gladiators.

The last thing I will do is ask the students if

they still wanted to be a Roman gladiator after
reading the story.
Assessment (How are you assessing students throughout the lesson?)
The questions at the beginning and end of the class period are a way for me to see what
the students know or think they know before reading the story and then what they have
learned after reading the story.
The writing activity is another way for me to see how well the students are grasping the
concepts because they will have to take what they know and make it into something of
their own.
Differentiation (How are you meeting the needs of different learners?)
By reading the book aloud the class it allows for the students to hear what the story is. By
stopping for questions and asking questions myself it allows for students to get
clarification about information that they are learning along the way.
