This

is a hands-on Geography activity to develop students understanding and knowledge of


the major geographical divisions of the world in relation to Australia. This activity would
work with pairs or small groups to allow each student the chance to participate, however
conducted as a whole class race. Students race around the room, using Google Maps to
locate and name the particular division on their clue card. As they complete the race card,
they move on to the next pit stop for their next clue. Once all the clues have been
answered, its a race to the finish line.

The location of the major geographical division of the world in relation to Australia
o 7 Continents (Africa, North America, South America, Antarctic, Asia, Australia,
Europe
o 5 Oceans (Arctic, Atlantic, Indian, Pacific and Southern)
o Equator
o 2 Poles (North and South)
o 4 Hemispheres (Western, Northern, Eastern and Southern)
The key tools and applications needed to access Google Earth

Teacher Instructions:
Students are to be organised into their teams for the race Group students in their regular
grouping established on ability and learning styles and assign each group a starting point
Set up clue cards and pit stops for each group to access the information. As students are
working around the room, observe participation and encourage all students to interact and
contribute to their team. Once students have finished the race, check their race card, to
ensure that all information is in the correct location and identified correctly. Use prompting
questions to align students thinking to start considering where Australia is located within
the World. Conclude the activity with a class discussion on learnt information.

Students Prior Knowledge:
Familiarity with Google Earth and the key tools needed for application
Previous lessons on the geographical divisions and their relevance to the world
Key learning area vocabulary (Equator, Poles, Continents, Oceans, Hemispheres)


Modification for students needs:
Students who are not confident in using Google Earth to map and locate the divisions
are encouraged to use the class globe as a hands-on resource or an atlas to
investigate the information required.
Students who are looking to go further can with their group, map out the oceans on
their race card.

General Capabilities:
Students engage with Numeracy skills as they critically engage with Google Earth maps to
collect data and use this information to develop their Literacy skills as they navigate, view
and analyse Google Earth to comprehend and interpret geographical information. Students
engage with Critical and creative thinking skills as they work with their group to identify and

clarify information and ideas. They then organise their information onto the Map (game
card).

ICT processes and skills:
Students develop their ICT capability by effectively and appropriate using the iPads to
investigate information and ideas. They work collaboratively with peers to use Google Earth
to research about the world and its divisions, adapting a new way to find and navigate
information. Students develop skills in collecting and interpreting information and co-
construct their learning and knowledge about where to locate specific information about
the Earth.

Assessment:
Assessment focus: During this activity students demonstrate their understanding that the
world can be divided into major geographical divisions and represent these on a labelled
map.
Assessment for Learning: Labelled world map: Students record the relevant information on
the world map and are able to successfully locate and name the geographical divisions.
Teacher to assess the level of understanding the students have demonstrated within this
task to instruct further learning activities. Students engagement and participation within
the task, will guide teachers critical reflection of the validity of the lesson and if student
were engaged with this style of learning.
Assessment as learning: Students to engage in critical reflection of their own participation
