Grade level: 5

Subject: Middle School Mathematics and Italian

Topic: Decimals, Money and Italian Culture

Objective:
The students will be able to add and subtract decimals to the hundredth place, and will be able to
recognize and understand the use of Italian money to purchase items by recalling Italian phrases
and vocabulary, previously memorized.
Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NBT.A.7
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings
and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between
addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

Materials:
Students: Paper, calculator, dry erase marker, notebooks, pencils or pen.
Teacher: White board, a bag of money, PowerPoint slides, projector and screen, Italian money,
flash cards, post cards, Italian magazines, books, copies of the activities and work sheet, grading
rubric.
Prerequisite Skills and knowledge:
The students already know how to add and subtract whole numbers and have recently learned
about adding and subtracting fractions.
The students have recently finished a lesson on greetings phrases and vocabulary, and the
cultural aspect of greeting etiquette in Italy.
Anticipatory Set:
The teacher will walk into a classroom with a bag full of money from different countries. Some
money will be United States money and others will be European money.
Input and Modeling:

The teacher will show a PowerPoint about adding and subtracting decimals. The PowerPoint will
include vocab needed to know, like hundredths and thousandths.
The teacher will provide a template to teach the Italian vocabulary and the phrases related to the
use of money and give examples of situations where these sentences are used, introducing new
expressions and words. A Power Point presentation will be presented to show authentic cultural
practices. Different items will be distributed around the classroom, like money, magazines, and
books, to help students visualize cultural materials.
Student Practice and Checking for Understanding:
1. Before starting the game the teacher will show examples of European money and give the
value of each. The students will be playing a game called Race to the Euro.
2. Students will get into pairs or small groups and the teacher will hand out a bag with
European change. In this game the objective is to get to a Euro the fastest.
3. Students will be given a booklet of activities related to the vocabulary just learned where
they have to translate words from English to Italian and Italian to English.
4. Students will be asked to respond to simple written questions related to the use of money,
such as Quanto costa il giornale?, Quanto costa il televisore?, Quanto costa la
lampada?. Each sentence will implement the use of cognates to help students recognize
the right answer.
5. Students will work in pairs to practice the vocabulary and sentences. They will ask each
other specific questions regarding the use of money in order to practice pronunciation.

6. The teacher will walk around to check for correctness in their answers and provide
constructive feedback by explaining any unclear point to each group.
Closure: Lesson Wrap-up and Culminating activity
1. The students will be given an assignment comparing percentage, decimals and

fractions.

This assignment will be include equivalent fractions, decimals and percent. The students will be
coloring in circles to represent all three. This assignment will show how all three topics are
related.
2.

At the end of the unit of study the students will be tested on fractions, percentage and

decimals. The test will include adding and subtracting all topics, converting one into another and
word problems
3. At the end of the unit students will be given a quiz in which they will be graded with a rubric
that evaluates the grammar, the vocabulary, spelling and organization of learned sentences and
vocabulary as well as the cultural aspect of Italy. They will also be quizzed on fractions,
decimals and percentage dealing with the culture of Italy.
