ACTFL STANDARDS
1.1: Learners interact and negotiate meaning in spoken, signed, or written conversations
to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.
1.2: Learners understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a
variety of topics.
4.1: Learners use the language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the nature of the
language studied and their own.
Context (How does it fit into the unit/curriculum?)
This will be towards the beginning of the unit. This lesson will be used to learn about the
different types of animals that the Romans would have used during the games. It will
build a foundation for the upcoming lessons.

Procedures
Pre-Activities: Description
Time Frame
Warm up game: name game, emotion, etc.:
5 mins
After greeting the students, the students will
play some sort of game to warm up and get
ready to learn in the Target Language. A game
might be a name game.

Objective(s) Targeted
1.1

Introduction to animals:
Students will be given an introduction to the
different types of animals that were used in
the Roman games. Students will discuss what
they think that the animals might be used for.
Students will learn about the animals with
flashcards that have a picture of the animal on
it and the name in Latin. Students will be
asked to repeat the name. After going through
the names a couple of time the cards will
change to having just the name of the animal
(in Latin) or the picture of the animal and the
students will have to say what it is (for name
in English, for the picture in Latin).

10 mins

1.2, 4.1

During activities: Description

I, Piscare:
After going over the names of the different
animals students will play the game I, Piscare.
(Go fish). They will have to ask the questions
for the game in Latin. (ex. Noah habesne leo?
Ita vero! Minime.) This will allow for the
students to practice using the animal names
and speaking in Latin.

Time Frame
10 mins

Objective(s) Targeted
1.1, 1.2

Post Activities: Description

Before students are allowed to leave I will
have the students tell me the name of one of
the animals. I will end the class with the usual
goodbye.

Time Frame
2-5 mins

Objective(s) Targeted
1.1, 1.2

Assessment (How are you assessing students throughout the lesson?)

Having the students say what the animal is either in English or in Latin will help me see
if I need to continue on with reviewing the Latin names or if I can have the students
move on to the game.
During the game I will be walking around to see if the students are asking for and giving
the correct animal cards to match.
At the end of the class I will have a good idea of where the students are at when it comes
to animals names and it will tell me if I need to do a lot of review about the animals the
following day or if I can have the students do a quick warm up using the animals the
following day.
Differentiation (How are you meeting the needs of different learners?)
By using cards with the animal name as well as a picture will help students who have
trouble with reading. This is also true with the speaking of the animal names.
Another option of this game would be a memory game. I would still want the students to
say what the animal name is in Latin.
