Lesson Reflection #1
Dr. Casey
April 16, 2015
On Thursday April 16, I was given the opportunity to teach a
whole group literacy lesson on text-to-self connections. The main
objective was for students to be able to talk about certain parts of the
text that remind them of something in their own personal lives. The
goal is for the students to make a text-to-self connection and recall
information from experiences in there live. The lesson first started with
the students gathered on the back rug listening to the story Thank you,
Mr. Falker. This book had many different situations occurring that I felt
would give the students a great opportunity to find something that
they related to. Students were engaged throughout the reading as they
were listening and answering questions correctly that I asked while I
read. The next part of the lesson had students brainstorming ideas on
a worksheet of connections that they made with the story. The issue
that I came across was that many students were having trouble finding
a connection to the story. To help these students, I made a list of a
bunch of different evens that occurred in the story. This helped the
students generate ideas and make a personal connection. The last part
of the lesson, I handed each student a strip of paper and they were to
write their favorite self-connection on it. I gathered the students on the
back rug and had each student share their connection, and then I
stapled the link to form a paper chain. The students loved this chain

and it represented that all of the students were about to connect to the
same text in so many different ways. The next lesson that I would
teach the children to further this knowledge would bring to incorporate
text to world connections and text-to-text connections. This would
have the students connecting books to real world situations, and
connecting one book to another. Overall, all of the objectives that I had
for the students were met and the lesson went smoothly and
successfully. The students were engaged throughout the entire lesson
from start to finish.
