UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

This lesson plan is part of a unit plan on the Americans on U.S. currency.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
Given a handout, the student will complete a money word problem worksheet to the best of their ability with a
score of three out of four on the rubric (Blooms taxonomy: comprehensive).
Given a computer, the student will be able to have more of an understanding themselves on how to work with
money from pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollar bills by participating in a fun game (Blooms
taxonomy: synthesis).
Given an interactive whiteboard activity, some students will come up to the board and complete a problem to
see their knowledge on their money counting skills (Blooms taxonomy: comprehensive and synthesis).
STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
TN Mathematics- 2.8 Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $
and symbols appropriately.
ISTE Standard(s):

1. Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using
technology.
2. Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to
support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.

MATERIALS:
Blank handout of word problems worksheet.
Pencil.
Internet access to:

Technology Integration:
Students will use the website stated above as a practice to get to learn more about counting money. Students,
upon completing this activity, will familiarize themselves on their knowledge/memorization of how much
each money quantity is worth as well as adding it up to make a certain amount of money.

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:


Students will demonstrate a clear understanding of how much each money quantity is worth.
Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson is a continuation of TN Mathematics standard 2.0.

We will refer to the summary created here as we continue to learn more about U.S. currency and why we use it
in America todays. We will also have many different activities/worksheets for lots of practices in the near
future.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction:

Begin by explaining the differences between pennies, dimes, nickels, quarters, and especially dollar bills.
Provide brief background information about the purpose to why we use U.S. currency and why it is
important for them to know.
Give students a few minutes to process everything to memorize/acknowledge because they will have a
few minutes to complete their worksheet.

Procedures:
Prior to the Computer (10 minutes)
Teacher Procedures
1. After the introduction, distribute
worksheets of money word problems
and ask them to quietly complete.
2. Ask to collect the worksheets before
going to the internet.

At the Computer (20 minutes)


Teacher Procedures
1. Have students open the link to access
the interactive money game.
2. Direct and show visually what
students are going to be doing on the
large screen display (projector).
3. After full acknowledgement that the
students know what theyre doing, let
them do the activity.
4. Monitor and assist as needed.
After the Computer (45 minutes)
Teacher Procedures
1. Students will let me know when everyone
has completed the game by looking up at
me.
2. Direct them to the large screen display for
another activity.
3. Open up the interactive whiteboard
activity.
4. Begin the activity and ask for students to
help complete this.

Student Procedures
1. Students complete their worksheet of the
money word problems.
2. They then focus on areas they dont
understand well and ask the teacher for
questions.
3. When completed, turn it assignment to the
teacher.
Student Procedures
1. Open an internet browser.
2. Go to the link provided for you.
3. Watch the tutorial to understand what to do
exactly.
4. After watching the tutorial, they may now
begin the game.

Student Procedures
1. Close out of the internet browser.
2. Pay attention to the large screen display.
3. Participate in the interactive whiteboard activity.

Closure:

Students volunteer to explain to the teacher as well as the classroom what they learned today
regarding U.S. currency. At the end of the class, the teacher will go over what they learned for
the day, check to make sure all worksheets are turned in, and dismiss the class.

I am aware that modifications will be made for students who did not master the objectives and for those ready

2. You picked up 15 cents off of the ground and your friend picked up 32 cents. How many

4. On Wednesday, you saw $3.80 on a table and $0.75 on another. How many dollar bills
did you see altogether?
