Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary Rocks
Rocks, Minerals and Soil
6th
Minerals have specific, quantifiable properties.
Igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks have unique
characteristics that can be used for identification and/or
classification.
Igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks form in
different ways.
Soil is unconsolidated material that contains nutrient matter
and weathered rock.
Rocks, minerals and soils have common and practical uses
Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use
information. a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry b. Locate,
organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use
information from a variety of sources and media c. Evaluate
and select information sources and digital tools based on the
appropriateness to specific tasks d. Process data and report
results
2 30 minute class periods
15 Students
2 ADD
Classify Igneous, Metamorphic and sedimentary rocks.
Methods
Teachers present new material through concept map
Students will take notes with hand out
Short quiz with notes due to large amount of material
Students will be able to touch and review types of rocks

participation

Evaluate and revise

Lesson Procedures:
Concept Map presentation given by instructor
Videos and Visual
Students will do short quiz with notes to better
understand large materials. Short Quiz will be graded
Students will rotate around rooms observing rocks and
recording their observations and reasons.
Practice taking notes
Practice recording observations
Students
21st century skills: EX: Nonlinear thinking, linear thing
Technology skills: Ability to comprehend information
through concept maps
Instruction: Concept maps will be given to students along with
videos and visuals. Students will take short quiz with notes to
better understand material. Students will do rotations and
observe and record.
Reflection/Revisions: I will give another possible activity to
better understand the differences between rocks.
