Overview- During this unit on birds, students will be learning independently and in whole
groups as they progress through the unit. Throughout this unit students will be introduced
to birds starting with the parts of the bird. Students will also learn about the life cycle of
birds, how the find food, what kinds of food they eat, and where different types of birds
live. Along with studying several different types of birds and their characteristics,
students will have the opportunity to design and construct their own birds nest using
materials found on the nature trail at the school. At the end of this unit, students will be
asked to using drawing and dictations to show knowledge they have gained about birds
during this unit study. Throughout this unit students will also utilize their speaking and
listening skills on information text read to the class, as well as their writing skills when
they write in their journals about birds.
Objectives and Contextual Factors- Each standard objective for this unit directly
correlates to the pacing guide for the year; therefore the objectives and expectations of
students work is appropriate for their academic ability at that time. For low achieving
students, their work maybe slightly below expectations in the writing area, but they will
be able to verbally dictate their knowledge and illustrate their understanding of birds.
Students will have the background knowledge of how to work on individual lessons and
sit and listen quietly during whole group instruction. Even though they may not have any
prerequisite knowledge of birds, their background in these areas will help them to be
successful in learning the new material. My student will an IEP will be assisted by his
shadow with moving materials when needed, though this will not directly affect is
learning abilities. ESL students will be will able to work one on one with the teacher after
whole group instruction if needed after a verbal lesson.
