Jim Hawkins- The main character and the 1st person narrator of the whole novel.

He is eager
to go to the sea and discover treasure. We dont think he necessarily wants to be a pirate but
there seems to be some ulterior motive. He is a modest character and doesnt about his
courage that he repeatedly shows throughout the book. Displays excellent wisdom and
sensitivity in high stress situations.
Billy Bones- Old seaman who lives at Jims parents inn. He hires Jim to be on the lookout for
him and brings him into the pirate life. Has a general opposition to law, order and civilization. His
treasure chest and treasure map start the major plot rolling.
Black Dog- Pirate enemy to Billy that threatens Billy when he pays an unexpected visit. His
character symbolizes the darkness and evil that is pirating. He is an example of a flat character
because throughout the whole novel he stays the same. He is threatening and scary and his
only goal is to protect the secret of Treasure Island.
Squire Trelawney- A local nobleman that organizes the trip to the island to retrieve the
treasure. His character symbolizes civic authority and social power in society.
Dr. Livesey- The local doctor that Jim respects but does not admire. Shows rational thought
and common sense throughout the novel. His character also exhibits great morality and modest
virtues throughout; treating the pirates just as well as his own wounded soldiers.
Captain Smollett- Captain of the voyage to Treasure Island. Takes his job very seriously but is
a little suspicious of the crew Trelawney hired for the voyage.
Long John Silver- The cook on the voyage to Treasure Island. He is also the secret ringleader
of the pirate band. He is very deceitful and disloyal and does not care for human relations,
however, he is always kind to Jim.
Ben Gunn- A former pirate who was left on Treasure Island for 3 years. The solitude has left
him looking like a wild man. He represents the deterioration of the human spirit yet, because of
this experience, he is morally superior to the rest of the pirates. He is the only character who
reforms and leaves his pirate ways to become a good citizen in society. He is also an example
of a round character because he goes from his rifraf ways and being totally reckless to being a
good member of society(or at least, is trying to be).
Pew- An old, blind beggar that presents the black spot to Billy so that he will give up the secret
contents of the treasure chest to the pirate crew. He foreshadows many pirate deaths
throughout the novel and often represents the angel of death.
Israel Hands- The sailor who steers the ship on its voyage to Treasure Island and a former
gunner for an earlier voyage. Acts as one of the guards when the pirates are ashore but when
he kills the other guard working with him, we see that he represents the recklessness and
unpredictable behavior of the pirates.

Tom Redruth- Pirate on the voyage that is killed but buried in a great ceremony. Represents the
good mens respect for the dead.
