1. Spookley the Square Pumpkin
Written by Joe Troiano
Bullying
This book has to deal with Spookley, a square pumpkin. He is not accepted by the

other pumpkins in the pumpkin patch because he is square and not round.
I think this book is a good choice, because it teachers children about bullying and

that bullying is wrong.

2. Everybody Loves Rice
Written by Norah Dooley
Diverse Families
This book talks about how different families cook different things, but one thing
they all have in common is they all cook rice, different kinds of rice, but they do.
That just goes to show just because you are different then someone else, you still

have things in common.

I think this book is a good choice, because it deals with helping children and

diverse families. Children need to know about that.

3. I am Jazz
Written by Jessica Herthell and Jazz Jennings
Transgender
This book is about a child being born a certain gender, but not wanting to be that

gender.
I think this book is a good book to share with students, because this is starting to
happen more and more and if we do not get children informed about it, they are

not going to know not to make fun of them.

he doesnt, because his dad went to jail.

are not bad.

10. A Very Special Friend
This book is by Dorothy Hoffman Levi
Hearing Impaired
This book is about a little girl who is deaf and she makes a new friend when

another deaf girl moves in right next to her.

11. Big Brother Dustin
This book is by Alden R. Carter
Down Syndrome and new children in the family
This book is about a little boy who learns that his parents are expecting a new

them making fun of them grow less.

12. Cats Got Your Tongue
This book is by Charles E. Schaefer

This book is about a child trying to hide family violence. She ends up telling the

ANNOTATED BOOK LIST

going to say hey! What is that mark on you? Not to say the children still would
not do that.
14. Happy Birthday Jason
This book is by C. Jean Cutbill and Diane Rawsthorn
Dyslexia
This book is about a child who has dyslexia. It explains how even though this

child has something different than other children, he is still the same as them.

I think this would be a good book to have in a classroom, because if children have
to take an inhaler or has problems breathing, then the other children should know

not to make fun of them.

17. Silent Observer
This book is by Christy MacKinnon
Hearing Impaired
This book is about a child who became deaf after having whooping cough
I think this is a good book, because if children hear the cough or have to see

know about it.
18. Lets Talk about Living with a Single Parent
This book is by Elizabeth Weitzman
Single parent
This book is about a child who lives with just one parent.

ANNOTATED BOOK LIST

This book is a good thing to have in the classroom, because children are going to
meet children with just one parent and they should know about it before it

happens.
19. You Can Call Me Willy
This book is by Joan C. Verniero
AIDS
This book is about an 8 year old girl who has HIV.
I think this is a good book to have in the classroom, because they need to know

know about it.
