objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows
and up to 5 columns; write an equation to express the total
as a sum of equal addends. ]

Formative and
Summative
Assessments

[Students will be
able to recognize
and match
multiplication
sentences to arrays.]

[I will introduce arrays to the

entire class. We will discuss the
difference between rows and
columns and how these match
with the multiplication
sentences. Students will come
to the board to practice. They
will be expected to tell me how
many rows and columns there
are in an array that I draw.
Then students will create an
array booklet which has
examples of arrays and
students must answer
questions about these arrays.
These books will be used for
future reference throughout the
week. ]
[As a class we will go through
some of the problems in the
array book as a class. Once we
have finished the problems we
will go to the tricky question
which was found at the end of
the booklet and was there to
show students that any number
multiplied by 0 equals 0. We
will then do thumbs again for
students to show their
understanding and students will
be split into groups based on
that. The group with less
understanding will work with
me and unifix cubes to work on
building their understanding of

[Participation check off

and will be used as the
assessment as this
lesson is an introduction
to arrays. Students will
get a check mark if they
are actively participating
and the space next to
their name will be left
blank if they do not
participate at all.
Completion of their array
booklets will also be a
part of their participation
grade. ]

[Students will be
able to draw arrays
and write
multiplication
sentences for them.]

[Again, a participation
check off, thumbs will be
used to as a selfassessment for students
to determine where they
are.

rows and columns. The group

with a better understanding will
work with more arrays
problems that are more
complex. ]
Lesson 3

[Students will be
able to write addition
and multiplication
sentences for arrays.
]

[Students will be
Lesson 4
able to use arrays to
(Optional)
solve multiplication
word problems. ]

[Students will be
Lesson 5
able to recall how to
(Optional)
draw arrays and
write multiplication
and addition
sentences to match
the arrays.]

[Students will receive M&Ms

and they will have a worksheet
in which students will have to
fill a box with them and then
write multiplication and addition
for these arrays and draw the
array once they have moved
their M&Ms. Once students
have completed this activity, we
will do a thumbs assessment.
Students will be divided into
two groups based on thumbs.
The thumbs up students will
work individually on an array
word problem activity while the
thumbs down and sideways
students will work with me on
reviewing the problems in their
array booklets. ]
[We will spend a little time
reviewing as a class and then
students will be split into
groups. The group working with
me will complete an array sort
and the group working
independently will be solving
multiplication word problems.
Once students are finished with
this, they will get into partners
and play geometry around the
room, solving word problems
and recording them for their
assessment. ]
[We will play I have, who has
for students to review what
arrays are and how addition
and multiplication sentences go
with arrays. Then students will
take their post-assessment. ]

[The M&M activity

recording sheet, thumbs
as a means of selfassessment.]

[Array sort, word

problems,]

[Participation in game,
final unit assessment.]
