Creating Capstone Proposal [15 hours]
8/29/14
Reflection: after completing a data analysis for a class, I saw how many students we had out every year
due to pregnancies and illness. I saw that we desperately needed some math support for these students.
The staff members that are available to help the students who leave school for an extended amount of time
do not have staff highly qualified in high school mathematics. My capstone proposal was to try and help
these students stay up to date on their work while they were out. After discussing this issue with several
other math teachers, we saw that we not only could help those students who miss school for long periods
of time, but students could use the same online materials to supplement their learning. We decided that I
would learn how to use an online platform and start with one unit in our lowest class. I would then teach
the learning system to those teachers and we would use the one unit as a trial run to see if we liked the
system and to make sure that it did what we wanted.

teacher who uses the system [4 hours]
Reflection: After looking at the learning management systems available in our school system, Desire 2
Learn (D2L) seemed like that best option. The computer programming teacher at our high school
currently uses this system for his entire class. I spent three hours with him on one of our preplanning days
at the beginning of the year to learn the basics and to learn how to use the learning management system
(LMS). This was very informative and gave me a good base to go and learn some of the other features on
my own to get my own handle on the LMS.

them D2L [10 hours]
Reflection: During this week, I took time to put together a presentation to give to the geometry teachers
on our next half day. These half days are used for professional learning days and this was the perfect
opportunity to get to spend some time teaching my peers a new tool.
Instructed our Geometry teachers how to use D2L during
5.2
our half day of school [2 hours]
Reflection: During this half day of school, the geometry teachers learned how to use D2L. We all added
our students and looked at how to navigate the system. We looked at how to get grades and add
assignments. We all left the professional learning time excited to use a new tool in our classrooms. I
learned how hard it can be to teach someone who struggles learning new technologies. This teacher
required the most help and time during my training.

Annotated Bibliography for Capstone [5 hours]
2.2
11/2/15
Reflection: I had to find 10 resources that helped me show why my project was good or bad. I learned
how many articles are out there and how hard it is to find a relative topic. I was able to find several
articles that showed success with a LMS in math classes. Several of these articles applied to college level
courses and so I had to use what information I could apply to my project.

10/20/15Created online unit for Unit 3 Geometry. [30 hours]

3.3, 3.5, 3.7
1024/15
Reflection: This was time consuming. I had to find instructional videos for all of the lessons and when I
couldnt find an instructional video that fit our standards then I had to make one. I had to create quizzes
and formative assessments to use throughout the unit to check for understanding. I had to create practice
problems for the students to use to practice a new skill. I also had to create surveys to use along the way
to check for usage and suggestions to improve the use of the system. These surveys were given to both
that teachers and students throughout Unit 3 and at the end to see what students and teachers thought.
During this time I also created what I needed to teach the student show to use the LMS.
Took all geometry students to the computer lab to teach the
2.3
students how to use D2L [1 hour]
Reflection: This was a complete success. The students loved the idea of being able to stay caught up on
their work if they missed. At this point we had 4 students on extended leave for pregnancies and illness.
They received training from Hospital and Home Bound Program staff member.

10/27/15Implemented online unit in Geometry for Unit 3. One hour

3.2, 3.3

per week day was spent reviewing material [20 hours]
Reflection: Each teacher used the material that I developed for this unit. The idea was for each of use to
work together after this unit to create material for all of the units in our class. Having one person create all
of the units for one course in one year is very time consuming, especially when they have to teach as well.
I spent approximately an hour every day of the week to ensure that the material was working and updating
anything that needed updating. I also responded to any emails in which students may have sent. I spent
some of the time working through some bugs and technical issues.
Met up with other Geometry teachers to get feedback about
2.8, 5.3
how well using D2L was going [1 hour]
Reflection: During a half day in November, I met with the geometry team to check in. We all decided that
the D2L was going well so far and the teachers liked that their students who may have missed a day a
school could use the system to stay up to date on class. Even though it had been intended in that use, we
found that it was an even bigger plus for our classrooms then the original purpose.
11/12/15

Looking at the data and closing the unit information. Gave

students a survey to see how much they used the Learning
5.3
Management system. [20 hours]
Reflection: The week after thanksgiving, I looked at the data from the unit. I complied all of the surveys
and looked at how often the LMS had been used and by what type of student. I met with each teacher
individually to see their personal opinion on the LMS and asked what could be done better for the next
units. We discussed how often their students had used the LMS.

Prepared a presentation for all mathematics on how to use

5.2, 5.3
D2L and what D2L can be used for [6 hours]
Reflection: The day before we went back to school, I prepared a presentation similar to one that had given
before but I geared it towards all of the math teachers. I had to make sure that I included ways in which a
support student and an AP student could use the system and get the most out of the LMS. I included data
on how the unit went in the geometry unit.
1/4/15

Gave a presentation on D2L to all mathematics teachers.

5.2
[1 hour]
Reflection: The winter pre-planning day presentation day was a success. Most of the math teachers
seemed very excited about learning new technology that could help their students succeed. I say mots
because there are 2 teachers who would rather go back to the old method of teaching in which we hand
students text books and no technology is required. These teachers will take some one on one work to help
them see how useful the LMS can be to those students who miss a lot due to chronic illness.

Work on Capstone Report Part B [20 hours]

5.3, 6.2

3/8/15
4/24/15
Reflection: I spent a lot of time compiling resources and information to use in my capstone report. I
learned a lot during this project and I am excited to have been able to help implement a new piece of
technology in my classroom and in my school.

Work on video script and creating video [5 hours]
4/20/15
Reflection: This video shows how much we needed something like for our teenage girl population and
how it ended up helping so many other students in the process.
