To begin with, all art consists of form and content. The form of art consists of the visual
elements and the principles of design. According to one of the class handouts, the visual
elements consists of line, light, color, texture, pattern, perspective, motion, shape and mass. For
example, perspective portrays the visual impression of a three-dimensional space on a twodimensional surface. Artist who use the visual elements will usually create a more interesting
work of art, which is why the visual elements are very important. The principles of design
describe the ways in which artists use the visual elements in a work of art. Based on one of the
class handouts, the principles of design consist of unity, variety, balance, rhythm, emphasis and
subordination. For example, variety is the use of many different elements of design, to hold the
viewers attention and to guide the viewers eye through and around a work of art. Art is
something that has great value in our society. Across the nation, there are many galleries, art
museums, parks, statues, monuments, sports stadiums and buildings which represent art and
attract many tourists from around the world. As well as, books, comic books, posters, graphic
designs, flags, pictures, and websites which also represent art. The title of the first piece of
artwork I will be discussing is Before We Knew (From the Mother of Everything) and the second
piece of artwork I will be discussing is Stand. The visual elements and principles of design play a
significant role in creating a magnificent work of art.
First, the artists name is Vandorn. The title of the artwork was Before We Knew (From
the Mother of Everything) and this painting was made in 2002. Next, the medium is acrylic paint
and prism color on cotton rag paper, which means what the artist used to create his or her work
of art with. First, the style of representation is abstract, which means art that uses a visual
mixture of color, line and shape. This painting represents abstract art by the use of all the

geometric shapes, lines, and circles used throughout the painting. Second, the thematic category
of this piece of artwork is art and art, which means a creative painting or drawing that represents
art in the drawings own unique way. Third, the visual elements that I identified in this artwork
are color, line, pattern, shape and mass. Line is an important visual element used in representing

on the art work, also all the geometric shapes and lines used throughout the entire painting.
Second, the other attractive piece of artwork I found in Diggs Gallery was also made by
Vandorn. The title of the artwork was Stand and it was made in 2013. Next, the medium is wood.
First, the style of representation is representational, which means the work of art was made to
represent something. This painting is representational because it says the word stand multiple
times around the artwork and wants people to come together and stand for something. Second,
the thematic categories for this piece of artwork are histories, stories and human experience. This
artwork represents histories, stories and human experience because all the people who shared
what this artwork meant to them, talked about coming together as one. Third, the visual elements
that I identified in this artwork are texture and pattern because the way this artwork was made.
For the most part, emphasis and subordination was put on the word stand. In addition, unity was
also another Principle of Design used in this artwork because everyone wants to stand together
and they are all on one accord.
In the final analysis, the visual elements and principles of design play a significant role
in creating a magnificent work of art. Using the visual elements and principles of design will
result in making an attractive and beautiful work of art. The principles of design and visual
elements will also help you to think or create a painting if you are having a difficult time trying
