Chapter 2 Reflection

This chapter is entitled Technology and Learning, which indicates to

me that this chapter is focused on the different technologies that can help
improve learning skills. From reading over the learning outcomes of this
chapter, I could tell before reading the chapter is that this chapter is going to
be geared towards the different styles of learning and how to approach
teaching techniques to accompany them.
What I found interesting about this chapter is that it acknowledges the
different learning styles of students and what can affect a students learning
outcomes. I am a visual and kinetic learner; I learn best my viewing and
actually doing something. The chapter explained how a teacher needs to be
aware of environmental, psychological, and personal filter factors that can
interfere with communication. As a student, an environmental factor that
affects me is when there is constant noise coming from the halls. Depending
on what I may be going through will affect my participation in class, so I just
try to isolate myself because I dont want to take my feelings out on
someone for no reason. Also, I have to restrain myself of truly bringing in my
beliefs in a class discussion because I dont want to offend anyone. Being
that I am aware of that now as a student, I will have to implement my
experience into the perspective of my future students. As a future dance
instructor, it is important for my students to be visual, audio, and hands on

learners, because in the dance world, they will have to conform to how the
teacher teaches.
Although, I did have prior knowledge before reading this chapter, I
learned some new interesting things. I was unaware of there being different
cognitive styles, such as the following: extrovert, introvert, sensing, intuitive,
thinking, feeling, judging, and perceiving. After reading what falls under
these categories (p.29, Figure 2.3), I believe my styles are thinking, feeling
and judging. Also, I liked how Howard Gardner believed that there was more
to intelligence than an IQ test and categorized them as followed: linguistic,
logical-mathematical, musical, spatial, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal,
intrapersonal, naturalist, and existential.
I plan to use what I knew and what I know now after reading this
chapter. The more I know about what type of learner my students are and
what affects their communication skills can help me figure out my teaching
approach. Knowing that information can also help me figure out how to
implement technology into the classroom.
