PRAY FOR NEPAL

Please pray for Nepal. At least 4,000 people are now known to have died in a
massive earthquake which hit Nepal on Saturday.
I first visited Nepal in the early 1970's. I had stopped in Holland to visit some
of my relatives and friends, and a friend of mine who was the manager of
Lufthansa Airlines in Amsterdam checked my visa for India and thought it
was up to date. However, when I arrived in Bombay, immigration told me
that it had already expired and told me the best solution would be to fly to
Kathmandu, Nepal, and get a new visa from the Indian Embassy there.
I stayed in a little hotel called Yak and Yeti. (A yak is a longhaired bovine and
yeti was the legendary abominable snowman.) There was a breathtakingly
beautiful view of Mount Everest from my room. While there, I made friends
with Christians who asked me to come back to establish an orphanage for
Worldwide Faith Missions.
A few years later I returned and met with some top government officials who
encouraged me to build the orphanage in the extreme east of Nepal on the
border of Bhutan. I flew in a small prop jet to get to the village where we
started a Christian mission.
This was one of the poorest areas of Nepal, which is one of the poorest
nations in the entire world. It was the middle of the winter, bitter cold, and
the room had no heat, only a cement fireplace in the corner of the room. We

started a small fire. I had only light clothing and the room was bitter cold. I
remember taking all of the clothes out of my suitcase and piling them on top
of me and then putting the suitcase on top of those clothes to try to keep me
warm. Within a few days I came down with a fever and cold.
It was on my return to the Kathmandu, flying above the clouds, that I saw
what some have described the most beautiful sight on planet Earth. As the
plane was flying west above the clouds, I saw a stunningly beautiful sunset
over the peak of Mount Everest which rose above the clouds, with the sky
ablaze with fiery colors. I could feel the presence of our loving Heavenly
Father in that small plane, and the words of the song, God is bigger than
any mountain that I can or cannot see, were going through my mind as i
witnessed that most spectacular sight.
Now an earthquake has devastated that country, with the death toll reaching
over 4,000.
My heart goes out to these precious people whom I have learned to love.
Please pray earnestly with me that the Lord will comfort the survivors and
bring some relief to the suffering people.
