KINES 400: Adapted Physical Education

Lesson Plan Template

Name: Evan Belczyk

Date: 4/23/15

Time: 10:00-10:45 AM

Setting/Site:.State College Area High School

Activity/Unit/Topic: Muscle Strength/Muscle Endurance
Student Information:
Grade Level or Age of Individual(s) you are planning this activity for: 10th Grade 16 years old
Student(s) Disability and Implications: (Briefly describe your students disability. List the important implications will you need to remember
when presenting your lesson/activity to your individual.)
Disability Condition

Implications/Adaptations

Autism- Some of the typical

characteristics of autism include;
focused interests, repetitive body
movements such as hand flapping,
unusual sensory interests such as
sniffing objects or staring intently at
moving objects, limited use and
understanding of non-verbal
communication such as eye gaze, facial
expression and gesture, and lack of
seeking to share enjoyment, interests
and activities with other people.

Since it can be difficult for Harry to stay focused when learning

new material, I will plan an exercise routine that he has done
before so he is able to catch on and stay on task. Since Harry has
trouble staying focused throughout a full lesson, I will need to ask
him questions about things that interest him such as super heroes
and professional wrestling. This way we can communicate during
the lesson between exercises so he doesnt lose focus and start
wondering around the fitness center. I will use short and simple
cues for the exercises so Harry understands the task.

Some common physical traits include

very limited upper body strength with
minimal muscle mass.

I will only use weight machines during the lesson and not free
weights. The machines are more stable and lower the risk of injury.
Since harry has minimal upper body strength I will control the
weight he will be lifting. The exercises will work on improving his
upper body strength.

Degree of Assistance/Support Needed: Describe any physical and/or technological assistance or support your individual(s) will need in order
to successfully complete your lesson/activity. Include personnel assistance beyond yourself, when appropriate.
Disability Condition

Degree of Assistance

Autism

During some of the upper body exercises, I will need to assist

Harry on starting the first repetition because it can be difficult for
him to move the weights at first.
As far as the equipment goes, I will only be using weight machines
to work on Harrys upper body strength. I will tell Harry to take a
break in between sets because there are times when he does not
want to take breaks and it hinders the following sets.

Individual(s) Objectives:
Cognitive: Student will demonstrate knowledge of what weight to use for upper body exercises by reading off the chart and adding
weight to the machine.
Psychomotor: Student will be able to properly lift weights by exhaling when lifting and inhaling when lowering the weight. Student will
also be able to lift weights by demonstrating proper form by keeping feet squared and extending the arms.
Affective: Student will demonstrate cooperation by following directions for each exercise by not giving up on a repetition and
demonstrating the skill being taught. Student will also demonstrate kindness to peers while waiting to use a machine by being patient.

Teacher Objectives: To prepare student to be able to use the weight machines in the fitness center without being aided by an instructor.

Equipment: Weight chart, Stationary Bicycle, chest press machine, shoulder press machine, bicep curl machine, lat pulldown machine, lat row
machine.
Protocols: (What are important protocols you will review with the individual(s) at the beginning of the lesson/activity? Script them so it is
exactly what you will be saying)
Each time you do a repetition I want you to count it out
I want you to tell me what weight to use for this machine
I want you to take a 30 sec break in between each set

LESSON CONTENT & PROGRESSIONS

Teaching
Cues The
cues are short
quotes of what
you are saying
to students to
remind them of
proper form.

Set Induction:
Today we are going to continue working on your
upper body strength so you can become big and
strong. Were going to start on the bicycles and then
move on to lifting weights
Cardio Warm up (10-15 Min)

MANAGERIAL STRATEGIES
Organization of space, equipment,
students (diagrams of practice
formations, equipment set up, and
game situations ), including method
for assigning students to groups

Safety Procedures
Checking field, equipment, and
facilities for debris, damage, etc.
What safety procedures will you
take to make sure ALL students are
safe in your class.

Make sure there is nothing on the

bicycle that could hurt Harry before
he gets on it.
Pedal a little
faster

O
X
Teacher Student
Harry and I will start the class
period by warming up on the
stationary bicycles.

After Harry changes into his physical education

uniform, he will ride on the stationary bicycle for 1015 minutes to warmup. I will keep track of the time
spent on the bicycles and the speed Harry is going
and will tell him to increase his speed towards the
end of the warm up. I will ride next to him on
another bicycle and we will talk about how his week
is going and what exercises hell be doing for that
day.
Exhale when

Make sure he is keeping good form

Upper Body Workout: (30-35 Min)

After warming up on the bicycles I will grab the chart
from the cabinet with all of Harrys workouts and the
previous lifts and weights hes done. The first
exercise I will work on with harry is the chest press
machine. I will look at the chart and see what
weight, reps, and sets Harry lifted the previous
session. He will than read off of the chart and add
the weights onto the machine by himself. He will
add the weight he did in the previous lesson and do
3 sets of 10 reps. He will take a 30 second break in
between the next set and then lift the same weight
for the same amount of sets and reps. He will take a
30 second break again and for the third set I will
add 5 pounds on to the machine. I will help him get
the weight up for the first rep and he will finish the
rest on his own. I will have Harry write in the
weight/sets/reps he did for this exercise for this day.
Next Harry and I will go over to the shoulder press
machine. Same as the chest press; I will look at the
weight Harry lifted the previous session and he will
than read it off and add the weight accordingly. He
will then lift the weight from the previous session for
the first two sets while taking a 30 second break in
between, than I will add 5 more pounds onto the 3rd
set if he is able to lift any more. I will help him get
the weight up for the first rep and he will finish the
rest on his own. I will have Harry write in the
weight/sets/reps he did for this exercise for this day.
We will move on to the bicep curl machine. I will
look at the weight Harry lifted the previous session
and he will than read it off and add the weight
accordingly. He will then lift the weight from the
previous session for the first two sets while taking a
30 second break in between, than I will add 5 more
pounds onto the 3rd set if he is able to lift any more.
I will help him get the weight up for the first rep and

OX

We will move on to the lat pull down machine. I will

look at the weight Harry lifted the previous session
and he will than read it off and add the weight
accordingly. He will then lift the weight from the
previous session for the first two sets while taking a
30 second break in between, than I will add 5 more
pounds onto the 3rd set if he is able to lift any more.

OX

We will move on to the lat row machine. I will look at

the weight Harry lifted the previous session and he
will than read it off and add the weight accordingly.
He will then lift the weight from the previous session
for the first two sets while taking a 30 second break
in between, than I will add 5 more pounds onto the

I will work with Harry on the lat row

machine and he will lift 3 sets of 10
repetitions
Inhale when
lowering

After we are done working on the lat row machine it

is time to wrap up the session.

Closure:
I will ask Harry how to correctly breathe when lifting
and lowering the weight. I will also ask him how his
feet should be and what to do with his arms while
lifting.

O X
I will thank Harry for being such a
good worker and explain to him
that its important to continue
improving his upper body strength.
5

Since this will be my last time working with Harry I

will thank him for being such a good sport for letting
me help him improve his muscle
strength/endurance. I will tell him that he needs to
continue these exercises so he can grow up to be
big and strong. I will explain to him that I truly
enjoyed the time spent with him this semester.
