Article Abstract Presentation: Disciplinary Literacy: A New Concept or Old as the Hills?

Evan Kopca: Music

Abstract
The author presents her views on different areas of development of music teachers
including literacy learning. Topics discussed include initiatives such as Drop Everything and
Read (DEAR) program fostered by music educators along with the sustained
silent reading (SSR) concept, reading infusion programs that have been developed across the
U.S, and the solfge and rhythm syllables used by the Kodly teachers. It mentions the
Organization of American Kodly Educators conferences.
Important Points

One unique aspect of schools that many businesses do not have is that schools go through
a cycle of starting and stopping. During the stop time, it allows educators to assess

education and try different modes and forms of instructions.

Disciplinary Learning: The idea that different literacy skills are needed for specific
disciplines. With the idea of disciplinary learning in mind, we can recognize the fact that
music educators teach music students specific terms such as Italian words,

solfege/rhythm symbols and standard notation.

The Kodly method of music education emphasizes comprehensive musicians to have to

skills to read, write and speak about music.

Music can be referred to as a type of intelligence (has an associated literacy) as well as a

disciplinary literacy, as proposed by Howard Gardner.

The development of technology may allow music to become more of a form of
multimedia expression as seen and heard through dance, theater, film and art.

Discussion Questions
1) How does your content area incorporate disciplinary learning?
2) The article towards the end briefly discusses how technology is changing the idea of
teaching disciplinary learning. How does technology affect the way students approach
your content area through reading and writing?
