Should the Electoral College Be Abolished?
I. Introduction:
a. Attention Grabber (hook): The Electoral College is something that could
possible demolishes America if it did not exist.
b. Background Info/Genre/Title//Summary: Having it can keep order. The
Electoral College was made when the constitution was made. If we take
this out of the constitution people could possibly take advantage that its
all right to change our laws. Changing our laws that we created a long
time ago could end very badly. Leave the system as it is. Have people
vote, the person who gets the most votes wins.
c. Thesis: The Electoral College is something that is necessary for the
survival of America. The major reason we need to keep it is that it gives
people freedom, keep the government in check, and helps the elections be
fair and not a popularity contest.
II. First Paragraph:
a. TS: The Electoral College has helped people have freedom and prosperity
in their every day lives.
b. CD: I am thankful for the complexities and inefficiencies that have
contributed to the freedom and prosperity we know in America
(McConnell 1).
c. CM: America has become very peaceful because of the Electoral College.
d. CM: The freedom and prosperity we have found has been acquired by all
the hard work the candidates do for the elections.
e. CD: The candidates go to every corner of the battleground states and
many people get the opportunity to meet and question them (Politics 1).
f. CM: Going everywhere can help the Electoral College decide if the
candidate is a person for the people.
g. CM: Questioning the candidates can help we the people decide if that
person is someone we want to represent us or not.
h. TRS: Keeping the Electoral College can help people have equal way of
living and help keep problems small.
III. Second Paragraph:
a. TS: The Electoral College can help stop the issues that occur for
presidential elections.

b. CD: It would encourage single issue ideologues and eccentric
millionaires to jump into presidential contests (Schlesinger 1).
c. CM: The Electoral College is supposed to help keep these single issues
under control.
d. CM: Keeping things under control are very important because some states
could want more power.
e. CD: Some of the larger states leaning in one direction could completely
over power a larger portion of the country (Politics 2).
f. CM: The larger states could possibly rip the country a part if we did not
have the Electoral College.
g. CM: The Electoral College needs to stay to keep other states from getting
more control and say then other states.
h. TRS: Keeping the Electoral College can help keep balance between
popularity and knowledgeable.
IV. Third Paragraph:
a. TS: The Electoral College has been helping keeping our president
elections and political parties in check.
b. CD: It has formed our political parties, moderated our more extreme
elements, and forged the presidential campaigns that have given direction
to our ship of state (McConnell 2).
c. CM: The Electoral College has done all these things to help set our
country in the right direction.
d. CM: The extreme elements could be that our votes get tossed a side and
the Electoral College overrides our votes.
e. CD: It gives the winning candidate the majority of the vote. In 1992
election Bill Clinton only received around 42% of the vote. However, due
to the influence of Ross Perot he still won a convincing majority in the
electoral college (Politics 3).
f. CM: The winning candidate doesnt have to get all the votes because the
Electoral College gets the final say.
g. CM: The Electoral College is very important to have to keep people from
voting on people for office just by popularity.
h. TRS: The Electoral College is something that needs to stay, to keep people
from popularity and keep prosperity growing.
V. Conclusion:
a. Restate Thesis: Keeping the Electoral College can stop popularity, give
people freedom, and helps keep the government from doing something
wrong.
b. Call to Action: The Electoral College needs to stay to keep balance in the
country. If people are allowed to take something out from our constitution
because they didnt like the rule then we wouldnt be were we are today.
Tons of people dont appreciate the rules that were created to keep peace
between people.
c. Final Thoughts: The Electoral College is something that needs to stay to
keep our country from is destroyed from the inside out.
