Review

Objective(s):
The students will demonstrate how to make
a volcano erupt. The students will learn
when you mix certain ingredients a chemical
reaction happen.

Assessment Tool(s): Observation

Assessment Criteria: I am hoping that the
students can recall how they made the
volcano at Boonshoft museum.

Academic Standards:

Core Standard:
Observe, manipulate, sort and generate questions about objects and their physical
properties.
K.1.1. Use all senses as appropriate to observe, sort and describe objects according to their
composition and physical properties, such as size, color and shape. Explain these choices
to others and generate questions about the objects.
K.1.2 Identify and explain possible uses for an object based on its properties and
compare these uses with other students ideas.
Background Knowledge/Prerequisite Skills:
The students will need to know what a
volcano is and if a volcano can erupt.
Materials:
flour
salt
cooking oil
water
large bowl
plastic bottle
baking pan
red food coloring
liquid detergent
baking soda

vinegar
water

Anticipatory Set: The teacher will bring up what happen at Boonshoft Museum. The teacher
will ask the students what they can recall about the museum. What they did? Once a
student says something about the volcano the teacher will let the students know that they
will be watching/working on a volcano. The teacher will let the students know that when
they mix two ingredients together there will be an explosion. That will grab their attention
and now the teacher may start making the volcano with the help of the students.

Procedures: The teacher will set up the materials to make in front of the classroom. There
will be a teacher aide there to help students out when they need help. We will be making
about 4 volcanos. The teacher will need to separate the students into groups. Once the
students are in their groups the teacher will ask one group at time to come up to start
working on their project. The teacher will help one group at time form salt dough around a
plastic bottle to form the volcano. Once the dough is dried which would be the next day they
will finish the project. They will place the ingredients into the bottle to form a chemical
reaction. Once the chemical reaction is form it will explode. Bubbly water will overflow the
top of the volcano. They will add red floor coloring to the water to make it look like a real
volcano.

Closure: After the experiment the teacher will ask the students what two ingredients did
they use to make a chemical reaction happen? What kinds of reaction happen? What color
was the lava? The teacher will get the students to recall what they did in the experiment.
