QUIZ TOMORROW

Section 1 Quiz will include:

Significant digits
Calculating scale from magnification and FOV
Labeling and describing function of microscopes
Contributors to microscope technology and cell

theory

SCIENCE 10
Plant & Animal Cell
Lab

TITLE
It is a sentence and not in question form
It includes the additional important information

about the experiment

MATERIALS
Materials are provided
Quantities, sizes, volumes are specified
Materials are listed in bulleted points

PROCEDURE
Safety precautions are listed first
Procedure is written in numbered steps
Procedure is easy to follow and in chronological

order
Procedure states what is to be measured
All important steps are present and procedure allows
relevant data to be collected

OBSERVATION TABLE
A table caption is included and describes all

information found in the table

The table caption begins with Table 1
The table is at least half of a page
Table is well constructed (E.g., there are no empty
boxes, data is not repeated multiple times, layout is
easy to follow)

OBSERVATION TABLE
All sides of the table are closed off with straight lines

(using a ruler if hand drawn)

Table includes all necessary information (always
containing both qualitative and quantitative
observations)
Units are found only in the heading of the columns
Significant digits are considered for measurements
No calculated values in table

BIOLOGICAL DRAWINGS
Use pencil
No shading
Draw big (at least half of the page)
All horizontal labels are on one side of the drawing,

no arrows
No circle around picture
Provide a title above diagram (middle)
Magnification of drawing on lower left side
Include a descriptive caption below diagram

DISCUSSION
The discussion refers to and is an insightful

analysis of the results.

It provides an in-depth account of concepts
learned, sources of error, assumptions made,
and possible revisions.

GENERAL PRESENTATION
No pronouns are used
Lab is written in the same order as appears in

this presentation
Lab is neatly written or typed

RUBRIC & GRADING

RUBRIC & GRADING

PROCEDURE ANIMAL CELLS

1. Set up the compound light microscope
2. Select ONE of the animal cells for viewing, and use

the low, medium, and high power objective lenses

3. Record your observations for each magnification.
4. Draw and label your animal cell. Use the
magnification where the whole cell is visible and
the cell parts are clearest. Use the technique
previously learned to estimate the size and scale of
your cell.

PROCEDURE PLANT CELLS

1. Put on an apron and goggles
2. Grab a small piece of onion twist and pull to obtain
3.
4.
5.
6.

a thin slice you do NOT need to cut with a scalpel

Prepare a wet mount slide with methylene blue
added to your section of onion
Observe your prepared slide on low, medium, and
high power objective lenses
Record your observations for each magnification.
Draw and label your plant cell. Use the magnification
where the whole cell is visible and the cell parts are
clearest. Use the technique previously learned to
estimate the size and scale of your cell.

PROCEDURE ANALYZING
1. Make a chart of the cell structures that you were

able to see in the animal cells and plant cells

2. Compare the following cell structures in animal and
plant cells: Cell membrane; nucleus; cytoplasm
3. Describe the differences in the image you see
when using the high-power objective lens instead
of the low-power objective lens

OBSERVATION TABLE
Your observation table should include:
What organelles are visible
In the plant cell
In the animal cell

How many are there?

In the plant cell
In the animal cell

Any important details

YOUR LAB REPORT SHOULD

INCLUDE:
A Title
Materials list
Procedure section
An Observation Table
A Plant Cell Diagram
An Animal Cell Diagram
A Discussion section

FRIENDLY REMINDER
This lab is due Tuesday April 7th
If you hand me a draft by Wednesday (tomorrow)

I will give you feedback by Thursday so you can

make adjustments over the weekend!
Look at the rubric handed out, if you can check
off everything, ya done good!
