OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:

Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

Students will:
1. Analyze plants as an example of a multicellular organism with specialized
structures at the cellular, tissue, and system levels
2. Ask questions about observed relationships, and plan investigations of
questions, ideas, problems and issues
3. Conduct investigations into relationships between and among observable
variables, and use a broad range of tools and techniques to gather and record
data and information
Students will:
1. Describe how the cells of the leaf system have a variety of specialized
structures and functions; i.e., epidermis including guard cells, palisade tissue
cells, spongy tissue cells, and phloem and xylem vascular tissue cells to
support the process of photosynthesis
2. Explain and investigate phototropism and gravitropism as examples of
control systems in plants
3. Define and delimit problems to facilitate investigation
4. Formulate operational definitions of major variables

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Describe and explain how the cells of the leaf system have a variety of specialized
structures and functions
2. Investigate and describe the transport system in plants
3. Examine aspects of phototropism and gravitropism and analyze as examples of control
systems in plants
4. Differentiate between phototropism and gravitropism

Introduction
Happy Tuesday grade 10s! Just a reminder tomorrow we have
a review period, so please bring questions to class! Also, you
have a unit exam on Thursday and your lab from yesterday is
due Friday,
Revisit Transport in Plants

Time

Discuss transport in plants and Inquiry question period

Presentation and video of phototropism, gravitropism

Questions about the unit and review

This is our last class of this unit!
Body
Revisit Transport in Plants:
This learning activity will revisit the important concepts of
transport in plants. Students will be asked to go over their
handout with me as I go along and address areas that need to
be revisited from last day
Observation: Students are attentive and asking
questions during this short presentation, taking down
notes, and being interactive with the class when asked
to discuss amongst themselves
Key Questions: Whats Osmosis? Diffusion? Active
Transport? Transpiration? How can Hyper and hypotonic
environments affect the cells? Why is this important?

Reflections from
the lesson:

This was a really good lesson to conclude the unit. I think that I excelled in
a lot of areas today where I would have struggled at the beginning of this
practicum. I thought that I asked good questions, waited an appropriate
amount of time for responses, and had a really interactive and
participation based lesson. I really enjoyed the discussion and question
period where students were the center of the lesson and asked to provide
answers to a variety of questions. I think I could have improved in this
regard by asking a few higher-level questions to promote good inquiry on
the students behalf. My presentation was short, had lots of visuals and a
really good video.
