OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:

Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

Students will:
1. Explain the relationship between developments in imaging technology and
the current understanding of the cell
2. Ask questions about observed relationships, and plan investigations of
questions, ideas, problems and issues
3. Conduct investigations into relationships between and among observable
variables, and use a broad range of tools and techniques to gather and record
data information
Students will:
1. Trace the developments of the cell theory: all living things are made up of one
or more cells and the materials produced by these, cells are functional units
of life, and all cells come from pre-existing cells
2. Describe how advancements in knowledge of cell structure and function have
been enhanced and are increasing as a direct result of developments in
microscope technology and staining techniques
3. Identify areas of cell research at the molecular level
4. Formulate operational definitions of major variables
5. Carry out procedures, controlling the major variables and adapting or
extending procedures

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Interpret and identify key areas of Cell Theory
2. Examine various aspects of the development of Cell Theory and Imaging Techniques
3. Apply various aspects of the development of Cell Theory and Imaging Techniques into their
study table
4. Inquire about particular aspects of Cell Theory and Imaging Techniques to promote
understanding
5. Demonstrate appropriate classroom behaviour

Introduction
Good afternoon! I heard this song on the radio this morning on
my way here; does anybody know what its called? (Counting
Stars) How are telescopes and microscopes similar? Do you
think they were created around the same time?
Brief review of the qualities of living things, including a
small table where the class can discuss as small groups
and bring their answers forward.
Cells as the building blocks of life

Reflections from
the lesson:

Review of adding and/or subtracting with significant digits in mind

I think today was my best lesson yet. I was relaxed, had a lot of fun with
the class, and encouraged a lot of discussion through opportunities to
collaborate together. I had a lot of different activities in class today and I
think that helped provide an active atmosphere and promoted a lot of
engagement from students. I tried something new with assignments
today, so Im curious to see how it will work out, as it is one are for
improvement:
I gave students worksheets that I will not be checking; yet some
concepts will be on the section quiz and the unit exam. This is an
experiment for myself to see who is responsible in the class and
taking note of what I mention to be important. This could go one of
two ways, and be either a good thing or a negative experience
I didnt allocate as much time as I wanted for a review period. A lot
of todays discussion went longer than expected, thus time to
review certain aspects was limited
Not necessarily an area for improvement on this lesson, but Jen
brought it to my attention that I have yet to provide a summative
assessment for student work.
Areas I did well today:
I provided a variety of different learning activities in todays lesson,
and I think the students really responded well to the variety
I had fun with this lesson, I felt like the students were more
responsive today and really participated and we encouraged a lot
of discussion and talking
I was clear with my directions today. Understandably, there will
always be questions that I dont immediately address, and I
assigned work I wont check, however, I was clear with what was
important and what students needed to know.
