Data Review: School District Case Study

The set of data that I am reviewing is: Highland Park Senior High School.
Analysis:
Student Demographic:
At first glance, you will notice that Highland Park Senior High School is an average size St. Paul
high school with a student population of 1,260. According to the student demographic
breakdown, more than half of the school are students of color: 1.2% American Indian/Alaskan
Native, 14.2% Asian/Pacific Islander, 18.3% Hispanic, 23.8% Black, and 42.4% White. (Refer to
graph and table 1) There are 46.5% students on free/reduced lunch, 12.8% in students in special
education, and 13.1% students are identified as English learner. (Refer to graph and table 2)
Graduation and Test Scores:
In 2013, Highland Park Senior High School graduated 266 students at 87.8% rate. The schools
graduation rate during the past 5 years is consistently staggering around the 80% mark with their
lowest graduate rate in 2011 at 82.9%. (Refer to graph and table 3)
In terms of the schools proficiency tests, their strongest subject is in the Reading. Both Reading
and Science surpassed the St. Paul Public School District but with Math lingering behind. Graph
4 7 illustrates testing results in Reading, Math, and Science as well as a comparison at the
Statewide and St. Paul Public School District.

On the SPPS website, its states that graduation rates are up across the board with the following
breakdown in terms of graduation rate and also the student demographic breakdown by race:

From these two data, although the graduation rate is increasing, it is in high enough for some
of our students of color. African American students makes up the second largest student
