Project Overview Table

Student: Paulette Escobar

Area of Concern
* Improve testing
procedures
* Increase test security
and better handling of
materials

Name of Project: TELPAS

Needs Assessment
* The TELPAS test is
used to transition
students into all-English
classrooms since we are
an early-exit campus so
getting accurate scores
for all our LEP students
is extremely important.
* Our TELPAS testing
procedures from the
previous year were not
handled carefully and
we had a few items that
the testing center
flagged us for.

Projects Action Plan

October 2014: I met with
my principal and he
entrusted me with
becoming the TELPAS
testing coordinator for the
2014-2015 school year.
November 2014: I
reviewed the TELPAS
binders from the previous
year to see the
irregularities that we
needed to be more careful
with.
November 2014: I met
with the campus
technology teacher, who in
the past had handled the
TELPAS reading session
and the data input on
TAMS for teachers. I
requested for him to sign
up for the same training I

Evaluation
In order to see
whether the testing
procedures were
improved and testing
security increased, I
used the binder from
the previous year and
the one from this
year. I compared all
items and there was a
noticeable difference
in how the paperwork
was handled.
Based on the
feedback I received
from my principal, he
believes that testing
procedures were
handled very
carefully and more
successfully than in
the previous year.

Reflection
What did I learn from this
project?
From this project I learned the
importance of clear
communication and ongoing
monitoring. I also learned that
when taking on projects that
have many moving pieces, it is
essential to be organized. Being
the TELPAS testing coordinator
for my campus was a
tremendous challenge because of
the many different components
which need to be monitored,
however I am extremely glad
that my principal entrusted me
with this project because I
learned a lot form it and I know
feel more capable to take on
other projects.
What did the students benefit
from this project?
The testing conditions for both
the writing and reading
components of TELPAS were
more conducive and therefore
the students ratings should be
more accurate this academic
year. The TELPAS training for

was attending so we could

plan together.
January 2015: I attended
the district TELPAS
training with the
technology teacher at my
campus.

Additionally, I will
use my check-in
session notes as a
final measure of
whether TELPAS
procedures improved
this academic year.

January 2015: I reviewed

the teacher information
under the testing center
website and e-mailed all
teachers with the necessary
information regarding
trainings and calibrations. I
also created a binder to
organize all necessary
forms.

002, 00, 008

January 2015: Created

excel sheet in order to
track teachers training
completion, certificates,
and other important items.

007

January 2015: Facilitated

training for verifiers and
raters. Provided teachers
with important deadlines
and follow up steps.

teachers was done in a more

structured environment and
expectations were set high,
which I believe will ultimately
benefit students, as their ratings
should also be more reflective of
their current level. Having
calibration activities for teachers
will also benefit students since
their ratings should be more
accurate and teachers are
expected to use their manuals
(PLDs).
What did the school benefit from
this project?
The school benefited from this
project because the testing
procedures and testing
conditions were improved when
compared to last year. During
the check-in session with the
testing center, there were no
violations or errors recorded.
Ultimately the school also
benefits because students
ratings should be more accurate
this year and that can help
improve the TELPAS score for
the overall campus.
