English 112 37 Week 2, Discussion 1 Professor Intawiwat In reading about the influence video games have on people, and in watching a video about these games changing the world, various different opinions have struck me. They have struck me by taking away my preconceived thoughts about video games and the violence that may occur from it. Some of these preconceived opinions that I had include that once kids play violent video games, they too will act out in the indecency and may even see the world in a negative perspective rather than a positive one. The TEDtalk changed the way I look at games in the world in a few different aspects. I believe, now having more knowledge on the topic of games that children who play online games may feel as if they can do anything. They feel a sense of accomplishment while in the midst of a game, along with using skills in order to reach their future goal. As these kids notice the skills that have in a virtual game, they may be more prone to recognize their own skills in real life. Video games, specifically the new ones of which were introduced near the end of the speech, are indeed capable of creating a better world. This may only be true, though, if the games are used correctly and in a manner that will influence society as we know it. In my experiences with video games, I have not played enough to create a personal opinion that would be reliable. For me, this is able to go both ways. The reasoning for this belief is that it depends on how the child reacts to battles. They may react by fighting whenever trials arise, or they may pass this trial with courage and strength, to defend themselves and others.
