Activity: Job Readiness Hard Skills Unit- Lesson #4: Interviewing Skills
Grade(s): 11

Time: 30-45 minutes

Learning Objective(s):
1. Students will understand the purpose of a successful interview and how to properly
answer interview questions.
2. Students will understand the importance of professional and appropriate speaking and
listening skills and how to use them into an interview.
Materials: Computer; YouTube video clips; Whiteboard; Projector
Procedure:
1. Counselor will start by showing a YouTube clip on an example of an interview (YouTube
Video Clip #1- What Not to Do in an Interview). Counselor will direct students to take notes
on anything that they feel the young man participating in the interview is doing incorrectly.
2. After the video clip, the counselor will have students come jot down one
thing/question/answer that they thought that the individual interviewing did on the board.
3. The counselor will then generate discussion on the importance of interviewing. The
counselor will also review some traditional and nontraditional examples of interviewing
questions. Specific attention will be paid to examples such as: Tell me about yourself,
strengths and weaknesses, why are you a good fit for this position, behavior questions (tell
me about when) The counselor will demonstrate appropriate mannerisms and professional
speaking skills to use during an interview.
4. Students will break into small groups of two and spend up to 10 minutes practicing 5-10 of
the important interview questions that were discussed.
5. Students will come back together as a class and the counselor can answer any questions
or concerns that they may have on specific interviewing questions.

6. The counselor will then play the second You Tube video (Video Clip #2- What to Do in an
Interview).
7. Students will then write down things that the man interviewing did correctly on the board.
The counselor will type of the lists of dos and donts and have the classroom teacher
distribute it out to them the next few days.

Plan for Evaluation: How will each of the following be collected?


Process Data: All student in Grade 11 will participate in this Unit- Lesson 4 of 4. Counselor
will take note of students in attendance per class.
Perception Data: Attitude: Percentage of students who believe that interviewing properly
and professional is important to obtaining a job. Skills: Percentage of students who can
accurately answer important interviewing questions. Knowledge: Percentage of students who
can identify the different types of interviewing questions and professional communication
skills.
Outcome Data: Increased ability to complete a professional interview.
Follow Up: Students could complete mock interviews during a career event day.
