Final Project IDD

Date of Creation: 3/24/2015

Designed by: Tom Shamrell
Time: 7- 10 minutes
General Overview/Need: The module presented here will be a pre-course for a Drama/
English class as a homework prior to the class to alleviate undue time wasters and give
the maximum time available for actual practice and guidance.
Problem analysis: There are an infinite amount of benefits that can be gleaned from
acting and plays within a school setting. Understanding the parts of stories for English /
Literature such as a beginning, middle, and end. Character basics and basic emotions.
Learning the objectives of character (what a character wants), objectives of the story
(what the story is trying to say or show) and many more. These skills are difficult to read
about for comprehension and it has been repeated over and over without understanding of
the impact. For instance; Shakespeare never wrote any play to be read, each character
was given their personal part with the cue line from the other actors. He work was meant
to be performed. Instead of having students read the play and then asking questions
about the play, there will be a great value in having the students read parts in the play as it
is performed. This e-learning will assist in setting up the comprehension and big picture
thinking for acting tasks.
Why should a computer teach it:
This type of instruction available on the computer will introduce the students to the
elements and the parts of acting out a story in preparation for the students prior to
activities. The e-course will lift some of the mystery of acting and better prepare the
students mentally for the parts involved within the play production. There are further
tasks that need to be addressed in class and covering some of the basics of acting will free
up more time for the learners and the instructors.
The Target Audience: Delivering this learning to students in grades 3rd through 8th will
help mentally prepare for needs and tasks of all the aspects of play production.
Target audience: The target audience is children in the 4th grade. Children in the 4th
grade are often learning about the arrangement and movement of planets. Learning about
the movement of the Moon will be within the cognitive reach of these audience members
as it will be in line with other teachings. By 4th grade, the students will already be
familiar with the concepts of the Moon, Earth, orbits, and movements, as they were
introduced to these concepts in this or previous grades.
Technical: Students will have the option to either complete this module in the classroom
computers, school computer lab or at home on personal computers. Having the module
set up in Flash and HTML5 will also give the advantage of allowing students with smart
phone or smart tablet access to complete this module.

Conditions of Instruction: Students must have access to a computer with the ability to
run Flash or HTML5.
Learning Objectives: Students will be able to identify, label and put together all pieces
of the play into complete picture.
Learning objectives
1. Given basic terms: script, actors, audience, props, set, costumes, lights, sound and
director students will define the parts that may be used within a play.
2. Given picture representations paired with the basic terms, students will be able to
match the pictures with the terms.
3. Given character archetypes of Hero/ Heroine and Villain or Villainess.
4. Given the picture representations of the terms students will be able to drag and
drop the pictures into a complete scene that contains all the smaller parts into a
cohesive picture showing all of the represented elements.
Assessment: The assessment for this learning project will be a responsive quiz, with
multiple choice, true/false, and fill in the blank questions, presented at the end of the
project.
Assessment instruments
1. Utilizing the pictures and the text, students will match the elements of a play
together. There will be no score for correct answers but the students cannot move
to the next portion until all of the pictures are matched with the correct pair.
2. Students will need to place the elements of the play together in the following
manner.
1. At least one actor should be placed on stage with a costume element such as a
hat, cape, or dress, etc.
2. At least one actor must have a prop in their hand which can be a tool, flower,
script, stone, or any number of things.
3. Sound can be any number of sound effects or music appropriate for the picture
(car horn, cow moo, silly song, etc.)
4. While a director can be in the audience or on stage, the correct position for this
example will have the director in the audience
5. Audience should be seated and can be anywhere that is in visual range of the
stage and the actors
6. Lights should be placed above the set (the set can be any location, beach,
castle, forest, school)

Instructional strategies

As this is an introductory pre-course, the main strategy will be from the Cognitive
Domain as the goal is to build a foundational knowledge at this point. Once students get
into reading a story or script, these elements can be directly implemented into an activity.
