Running Record
Purpose
The focus of this lesson will be to address the level of accuracy in a students reading
and to determine what methods he/she is using to decode text.
SOLs:
Reading K.7 The student will develop an understanding of basic phonetic principles.
a) Identify and name the uppercase and lowercase letters in the alphabet
b) Match consonant, short vowel and initial consonant diagraph sounds to appropriate
letters
c) Demonstrate speech-to-print match through accurate finger-point reading in familiar
text that includes words with more than one syllable
d) Identify beginning consonant sounds in single-syllable words
Reading K.9 The student will demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts.
a) Identify what an author does and what an illustrator does
b) Relate previous experiences to what was read
c) Use pictures to make predictions
d) Begin to ask and answer questions about what is read
e) Use story language in discussions and retellings
f) Retell familiar stories, using beginning, middle and end
g) Discuss characters, settings and events
Objectives

The student will be able to read with 90-97% accuracy while demonstrating
comprehension of the text through predicting by using pictures.

Procedure
Introduction:

Show student the book they are about to read

Read the title and ask him/her what they think the book is going to be about

Do a picture walk with the student while covering the text

Explain that you are simply listening to him/her read while taking notes to help
you understand him/her better as a reader

Development:

Instruct the student to begin reading when ready

Follow along as they read with a hundreds chart

o Put a dot in the corresponding box to the word him/her read correctly
o Make correct notation in the box corresponding to any words read
incorrectly
Summary:

Ask the student if their prediction about the book was correct

Go over any errors made with the student, so they know where they messed up
and how to correct it the next time

Dismiss the student back to their seat and tell them how great they did

Materials

Level A book, My Dog

A hundreds chart for recording errors as the student reads

A miscue analysis chart

Evaluation Part A

Once the running record is complete I will analyze the students errors in a miscue
analysis chart to determine if the objective was met

Evaluation Part B

Did the student meet your objectives?

Yes, out of 36 words in the book he only missed 1. So he read with 97%
accuracy.

What were the percentage of meaning, structure and visual cues used? What was
the percentage of self-corrections?
He only missed 1 word, and he had no self-corrections. The word he
substituted with sounded right and made sense. His percentage of meaning
was 100% and his percentage for structure also was 100%.

What were the strengths and weaknesses of your teaching during the lesson?
I think I did really well with explaining the task to the student, and the
picture walk through went well also. One weakness I would say is that I got a
little off track in the hundreds chart, more practice will ensure that doesnt
happen again!

How would you change the lesson the next time you teach it?
The next time I teach the lesson I think I will not go into it assuming that the
child doesnt know how to read and therefore doing a picture walk. This
student would have done perfectly fine without a picture walk. As a matter of

fact I think my picture walk may have been a little to revealing as to what
was happening in the text.
