Word Choice- Pop Rockin Day Two

Purpose
The purpose of this lesson will be to continue word choice with adjectives.
Students will experience Pop Rocks in their mouth and begin planning of a
descriptive paragraph about the experience.
SOLs:
Writing 3.9 The student will write for a variety of purposes.
a) Identify the intended audience.
b) Use a variety of prewriting strategies.
c) Write a clear topic sentence focusing on the main idea.
d) Write a paragraph on the same topic.
e) Use strategies for organization of information and elaboration according to the
type of writing.
f) Include details that elaborate the main idea.
g) Revise writing for clarity of content using specific vocabulary and information
Writing 3.10 The student will edit writing for correct grammar, capitalization,
punctuation, and
spelling.
a) Use complete sentences.
b) Use transition words to vary sentence structure.
c) Use the word I in compound subjects.
d) Use past and present verb tense.
e) Use singular possessives.
f) Use commas in a simple series.
g) Use simple abbreviations.
h) Use apostrophes in contractions with pronouns and in possessives.
i) Use the articles a, an, and the correctly.
j) Use correct spelling for frequently used sight words, including irregular plurals.

Objectives
The students will be able to use descriptive words to describe and write
about an experience when given Pop Rocks to eat with 95% accuracy

Procedure
Introduction
To introduce the lesson the teacher will bring out the anchor chart created
to describe the bag on the day prior to
The teacher will lead a discussion to review some of the words chosen,
and some of the features of the bag
The teacher will then open the bag and pull out the Pop Rocks
Students will be given some Pop Rocks and be encouraged to think about
what is happening when they eat them
How does it feel?
What does it sound like?
What do they taste like?
Development
As a class the teacher will use a graphic organizer to model pre-writing and
record class experiences with the Pop Rocks
The class will have a small discussion about what happened
Students will be encouraged to use descriptive words and adjectives
to answer the following questions How did they feel?
What did they sound like?
What did they taste like?
Independently, students will then begin to work on a personal graphic
organizer to describe their personal experience with the Pop Rocks
Summary
To close, students will Stand up, Hand up, Pair up and share their description
with a partner

Evaluation Part A

The students independent practice will be evaluated to see if the objective


was met
Adaptations/Remediation (For students with learning challenges)
Students who are struggling will be encouraged to make a list of descriptive
words on the Pop Rocks Graphic Organizer worksheet instead of complete
sentences
Extensions (For Advanced/Gifted Students)
Advanced students will be encouraged to try and write complete sentences
when describing on the Pop Rocks Graphic Organizer worksheet
