(Sad on ® ‘A’ Reud the passage below and answer the questions that follow. @ a i & 1 Looking at the pressing problems faced by Lhe residents of Taman Indah, T knew I had to bring them to the attention of the local authorities. As the Head of the Residents’ Association it is my moral duty and responsibility to highlight the discomforts that we residents have to put up wilh, 2 Firstly, we have the problem of uncollected rubbish. The town council trucks have not como for more than a week now and the rubbish has been piling up. This has led to unsightly heaps of rubbish that emit a foul amoll | that attract all kinds of pests. To make mattars worse, stray dogs have been | baving a Geld day tearing up garbage bags. and the rubbish gets strewn | all over. We are afraid an epidemic may break oul and cause the residents, especially children, to fall ill. The residents have called up the coum many times but no action has been taken so far. 3 Secondly, the playground, thal was initially well maintained, is now unkempt. A month ago 3 board was put up informing us that the park is closed to facilitate the building of a racycling centre. Residents were forbidden to use the park. However, no progress has been made and now vandals have destreyed the playground equipment aud the grass has not been cut. The broken equipment can endanger children who sometimes play there. The place has become a haven for drug addicts who lurk around at night and cause a disturbance. 4 ‘There are also many stray dogs Ubvat cause havoc in the neighbourhood. They come in packs, chasing and biting irmocent passers-by. They can be heard fighting, howling aud barking in tbe night, causing us slecpless nights, The dogs also scavenge. on the rubbish that has piled up. Must of the dogs have come from lhe nearby squatter area Uhat was recently vacated. and belonged to thase who hava been evicted. 5 Another major problem we face is the conditions of the toads in our area. There are numerous potholes on the roads, asa vensequence of | heavily laden lorries that ply the roads to the construction sile nearby. These vehicles are driven at a fast speed and a lot of sand and other materials drop out onto the reads. The potholes have become huge and this is hazardous for road users. The situation becomes worse. when it rains and floods the holes. Many accidents have occurred ay a result of motorists and molorcyclists swerving or braking to avoid these holes. During heavy | downpours mud, sludge and a lot of debris gels washed down into some of our homes since the construction site is on a higher ground. 6 Weare a peavelul, sell-contained neighbourhood and we have a right | to peace and comfort. We sincerely hope that the authorities concerned office will look into our plight and that immediate action be takan to solve th problems. oF B Answer all questions.
