1st day - introduce new station work.
2nd 5th days- Daily
1. Mini-lesson from Guided Practice (basic concepts): Have class do one or two
problem(s) in pairs using white board or worksheet to show level of understanding.
(Use this formative assessment to divide students into small groups based on need.)
2. Worksheet with 3 problems from Independent Practice to do on own: Turn in
for a grade. If needed, break into groups. Work on identified need 5-10 minutes per
group. (Use differentiated worksheets.)
3. Do station work. Meet with individuals/small groups to determine if grasping
content and to reteach/reinforce concepts, if needed.
4. Assign Homework: Use problems from previous lessons. (As needed.)
5. Closure: Regroup. How successful were we as learners today? What did we do
well? What is one new thing we learned today? Are there things we could focus on
tomorrow to be more successful? What did we find it hard to wrap our brains around
today?

Problem-Solving Investigation:
The Four-Step Plan
Mathematical writing is much different than writing you would do in an
English or Social Studies class. Look at the following formula that
mathematicians might follow as they work to solve a problem.
Step 1. Understand Read and get a general understanding of the problem.
What are the facts?
Step 2. Plan Make a plan to solve the problem and estimate the solution.
What is your strategy to solve the problem?
Step 3. Solve Use your plan to solve the problem.
How can you apply the strategy?
Step 4. Check Check the reasonableness of your solution.
Justify your answer.
Your job is to choose 1 (0ne) Case Study problem from the worksheet
(p. 43) to examine and solve using the Four-Step Plan below. You will write
the process of your thinking and how you solved the problem in your math
journal on the next blank page. Follow step-by-step. Use complete sentences!

Common Core Station

The Common Core State Standards are designed for you to review many
different standards that you should already know. This station is to help you
practice some of these standards.
Complete the worksheet(s) in this station tub. Solve all of the problems on the
sheet. When you are finished, put the sheet in the completed work side of your
folder.
SHOW all of your work!
Be sure and do your best.

Vocabulary Station
There are important vocabulary words that you need to know during this chapter.
Inside this tub you will find cards with the terms and definitions. Match the words
with their definitions. Then check the glossary in the back of the enclosed math
book to make sure you have them correct. Once you have them correctly paired,
follow the directions below.
1. Match the words with their definitions. You may use your iPad to find the
definition and example if you wish, BUT you must be sure and use the
mathematical definition.
2. Write each word on the outside of the folded paper. Then on the inside left,
write the definition of the word and on the right side show a picture with an
example.
3. When you have correctly finished these words, you will glue the papers
into the back pages of your math notebook as a resource.
Use your own words when writing down the definition. Do not just copy the
definitions that you find. You need to be sure you understand the words.

1st day Activity 1:

Practice work. Assigned seats for independent work. Rationale: Limited time to

H.O.T. Problems Station

H.O.T. problems are used to show your higher-level thinking. You need to
respond to them in your math journal. Be sure to give a complete answer and
explain your thinking. Dont forget to put the heading H.O.T. Problems and the
date at the top of the page.

1. Complete the worksheets in this station tub.

2. SHOW your work!
3. When you have completed the worksheets, put them in the finished pocket of
your folder.
Be sure and do your best.

Real World Applications Station

Many students wonder how the math they are learning relates to the real world.
Even though students sometimes find it hard to understand how they will use
their new-found knowledge, the fact is, it will show up in some form or other as
students mature.
This station is to try and help you make the connection.

1st day Activity 1:

Introduce new stations:
Real World Problems
Common Core Review
H.O.T. Problems
Complete any unfinished station work from the past week.
Start new station work.
2nd day Activity 2:
Discuss new vocabulary for Lesson 6.
Start Guided Practice
Develop the ConceptOutline a rectangle on a grid that is 16 units wide and 1 unit high on the board. Have
the students copy the grid into their notebooks. Starting from the left, ask students to
shade 12 grid squares.
Ask: What is the ratio of shaded squares to total squares?
If you divide your rectangle into eighths, what is the ratio of shaded eighths to
the total number of eighths?
What is another way to divide the rectangle into equal parts? What is the ratio
of shaded parts to the total number of parts?
Remind students that if two ratios are equivalent then they share the same unit rate.
Write and Solve Proportions Display Presentation from ConnectED on Smart Board. Go over examples 1 & 2.
Precede with Guided Practice (as pairs with white boards problems a, b, c & d)
Give out Independent Practice sheets (problem 1-3 GP, 1-5 IP). Collect when done.
Continue with station work. Meet with individuals/small groups to determine if
grasping content and to reteach/reinforce concepts, if needed. Should complete 1
station each day, if possible.

Develop the ConceptAsk: What is the rate of change of a plant that grows 0.5 inch per day?
What is the rate of change of a pool that is emptying by 25 gallons per minute?
What is 75 feet/3 days in simpliest form?
Remind students the rate is written as a fraction, which implies the operation of
division and that is a clue for how to find the unit rate.
