Practice Using the Code of Ethical Conduct.

Directions: For each situation described below, answer the following 3 questions:

Situation 01 - A parent tells you that, if his child hits anyone, you are to lightly slap her hand.
A. What can or should you say and do? (Focus on the ethics)
Explain to the parent that as a teacher we are not to harm the children and that I personally do not
agree with that solution. Explain that I have my own method of dealing with children who are hitting
and it does not involve and physical harm.
B. What are some of the possible negative consequences for you, by saying/doing these?
The parent may not like that I am disagreeing with the way they discipline.

P-1.1Above all, we shall not harm children. We shall not participate in practices that are
emotionally dam- aging, physically harmful, disrespectful, degrading, dangerous, exploitative, or
intimidating to children. This principle has precedence over all others in this Code.
Situation 02 - A parent who is obviously drunk comes to pick up her child.
A. What can or should you say and do? (Focus on the ethics)
I would ask them to come with me to the office with to speak with the directors. I would explain that I
had some concerns we needed to discuss.

The parent may get angry or aggressive.

P-1.11When we become aware of a practice or situation that endangers the health, safety, or wellbeing of children, we have an ethical responsibility to protect children or inform parents and/or others
who can.

Situation 03 - You see a child left alone in a car in the school parking lot.
A. What can or should you say and do? (Focus on the ethics)
Inform the director and follow and policies the school has. (calling the police) Ensure that someone is
by the consider to supervise the child.

The parent may get very upset with you and it can cause a strain in the relationship.

Situation 04 - You hear co-workers making racially/culturally inappropriate remarks about a family.

B. Explain to them that you dont think their comments are professional and that this is not the proper
environment to be discussing such things.

cognitively stimulating and that support each childs culture, language, ethnicity, and family structure.
Situation 05 - A co-worker asks you to cover for her while she runs an errand; she is not on break.

B. Let her know that I am not comfortable with it and would not lie if I was asked.

The co worker will probably get upset with me and decide not to speak with me anymore.

CI.P-3A.2When we have concerns about the professional behavior of a co-worker, we shall first let
that person know of our concern in a way that shows respect for personal dignity and for the
diversity to be found among staff members, and then attempt to resolve the matter collegially and
in a confidential manner.

Situation 06 - Your director asks you to go into a different room to provide coverage during a
licensing visit, in order to meet ratios.
A. What can or should you say and do? (Focus on the ethics)
I would ask where the other person in the room was and if the answer was that there was none, I
would explain that I was not comfortable with the situation and that I did not want to risk breaking the
law. I would ask to please go back to my room.

I could possibly get fired or be treated badly by management after that. I could get stuck doing extra
duties.
P-3B.3We shall not violate laws or regulations de- signed to protect children and shall take
appropriate action consistent with this Code when aware of such violations.
