At Home in Tunisia
Overview

CSSI (Grades 1-6)

Materials

Students will learn about the language, food, and culture of Tunisia through a
group reading of the chapter At Home in Tunisia from the Grade 3
Textbook Connecting with the World.

Curriculum Connections

3.1.2 Students will examine the social, cultural, and linguistic


characteristics that affect quality of life in communities in other parts
of the world.
3.1.3 Students will examine the geographical characteristics that shape
communities in other parts of the world.
3.1.4 Students will examine economic factors that shape communities
in other parts of the world (ex. goods and services, technologies,
transportation, communication).

Objectives
Students will learn about city and country life in the country of Tunisia.
Essential Questions:

Where is Tunisia on a world map?


What is the capitol of Tunisia?
What countries are close to Tunisia?
What language(s) do people in Tunisia speak?
What kinds of food do people in Tunisia eat?
What types of transportation do people in Tunisia use?
What is a souk? What does it look like?
What is a nomad? Where do they live?

Activities

As a class we will read about Ahmeds life in Tunisia, as stated on


pages 2 - 5, and 12 - 15 of the Grade 3 Textbook Connecting with the
World.
As a class we will discuss the questions outlined in the Objectives.
As a class we will locate Tunisia on a flat map, as well as on a globe,
and discuss what countries neighbor Tunisia.

Adaptations
Ben will be able to answer questions about
Tunisia after the reading, and locate
Tunisia on a map. Ben may also be able to
read portions of the text out loud to the
class.
Dylan will be able to answer questions
about Tunisia, read sections of the
chapter, and locate Tunisia on the map.
Jade will be able to point to different
pictures in the book, and locate Tunisia on
the map.
Sara will be able to answer questions
about Tunisia, read sections of the
chapter, and locate Tunisia on the map.
James will be able to point to pictures in
the book, and locate Tunisia on the map.
Nathan will be able to answer some
questions about Tunisia, point to pictures
in the book, and locate Tunisia on the
map.

Assessment

Students will be able to locate Tunisia


on a world map.
Students will demonstrate an
understanding that the culture of
Tunisia is both similar and different to
life in Canada (through observation,
and by questioning students).
