Unit: Under, Over, Through

Lesson # 3

Level: Foundation

Time:20- 35 Minutes

Curriculum
Make observations about familiar places and pose questions about them (ACHGS001)
Record geographical data and information collected by observation
(ACHGS002)

Lesson Objectives:
In this lesson students will:
-identify the features of a school.
-describe the different features of the school using their senses sight, smell, and hearing.
-take pictures of the different features of the school.

Prior Knowledge


As this is the third lesson in the unit the students will have some prior knowledge:

Understanding of the five scenes
Understanding of how to use the camera and I pads.

LESSON STRUCTURE:
Time

Introduction & Motivation:

1. Ask students to come to the floor and sit down.


2. Play a game of Senses Simon Says.
Simon Says put your hand on the body part that
allows us to hear. Continue this until students are
able to identify all five senses.
3. Explain to students that in this lesson we will be
exploring our school and all the different features.
4. Also explain to the students that we will be looking at
the features of the school and making observations
based on what they can see, hear, fell and smell.
5. Tell the students the WALT, WILF and TIB of each
lesson.
WALT- We are learning to identify features of our
school and make observations based on our sensessight, touch, hearing, smell.
WIFL- I am looking to see that you can identify the
features of our school and make statements like at the
tuckshop I can smell food in the oven.
TIB- This is because it is important for us to know
what is in our school and where they are around our
school.
6. Tell students that they will be apart of one Cam
Team. Explain the 4 Cam Teams
When we arrive at each location or feature of the
school we are going to take pictures of what we see
and make videos of what we can smell, hear and what
we can touch.
7. Remind students of the expectations of walking
around the school and being respectful to the other
teachers, students and workers in the school.
8. Ask students to make two lines at the door. Boys to
line up first and then girls.

12. Tell the students that it is now to time to spilt up into

the 4 different teams and make observations. Send


one team off at a time with their adult helper.
Work with the Sight Cam Group and allow them to
take pictures both inside and outside the church. For
example encourage the students to take pictures of the
crosses, candles and pews.
Other Helpers: Will work one on one with the
remainder groups and help them record videos or
audio. For Example
Ask students What can you hear?

Then one student will record the group There is not
much noise in the church .. there is no noise
What can you smell- I can smell candles burning
13. What can you feel?- The building feels rough on the
outside but inside the floor is smooth
14. Repeat steps 9 to 13 and explore the following areas
in the school
- Playground
- Tuckshop
- Library
- Grade 6 classrooms
- Music Room

Conclusion:

15. Ask student to take off their badgers when entering


the room and place them into a bucket.
16. Direct students to the floor and ask students the
following questions
What features/ places did we visit? In the library
what could we see? What could we hear ect.
17. Explain to the students that the pictures and videos
will be used in our next lesson.
18. Give praise to students about how well they did
walking around the school and making observations.

Assessment of Learning
This assessment for this lesson will be assessment for learning. Through observations students will
demonstrate their ability to identify features around the school. It will also provide information based
on the student ability to identify different places through the different senses.
Anecdotal notes can also be taken based on how the students interact with each other and work
together.

-Was the lesson engaging?
-Did students participate and stay on task?
-How could you change this lesson to improve it if you were to use it again?
-Where the lesson objectives reached?
