Proposal #1: Natural Landscape

For this idea, we would depict an ecosystem natural to Belize, such as the coral reef
barrier or the jungle. We would be as accurate as possible, showing actual species
of vegetation and animal life, yet in a stylized manner like that of Henri Rousseau.
We would possibly utilize Belizes national symbols, such as the national bird
(toucan) and national animal (tapir). The purpose of this mural is show an
appreciation for the natural environment, emphasizing the importance of biology
and microbiology and the colleges increasing role in the development of these
disciplines.

Proposal #2: Replanting the Mangrove Forrest

For this proposal, we would depict the planting of the Mangrove trees. This would
show both the human figure and the natural environment. The purpose of the
mural would emphasize the importance of biodiversity and preservation of the
environment, and the colleges supporting role in these issues.

Proposal #3 Mayan Heritage and Traditions of Scholarship

For this mural idea, we would draw from the rich Mayan history that valued writing
and scholarship. They had several gods of writing, the main ones being Itsamna
and Pawahtun. Theres an image of one god/scribe teaching mathematics. They
also used the image of the monkey to associate with writing and scholarship,
possibly due to the intelligence of the monkey over the other animals in the jungle.
We would include different Mayan icons, hidden within a jungle setting. These icons
would be depicted in stone and paint, and carved in jade, similar to excavated
Mayan artifacts. We would also incorporate objects such as the conch shells they
used for inkpots, and writing sticks.
The purpose of this mural is to show the colleges role in studying the Mayan
civilization. Another aim of this idea is to run a common theme of scholarship,
making a connection between the scholarly values of the college with the vast
traditions of scholarship within this ancient civilization.
