9.5 Classes of Functions

Whitney Stratton
CT: Shaun Danicek
Common Core State Standards:
HSF.IF.A.1: Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the
range) assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If f is a function and
x is an element of its domain, then f(x) denotes the output of f corresponding to the input x. The
graph of f is the graph of the equation y = f(x).
HSF.IF.A.2: Use function notation, evaluate functions for inputs in their domains, and interpret
statements that use function notation in terms of a context.
HSF.IF.B.4: For a function that models a relationship between two quantities, interpret key features
of graphs and tables in terms of the quantities, and sketch graphs showing key features given a verbal
description of the relationship. Key features include: intercepts; intervals where the function is increasing,
decreasing, positive, or negative; relative maximums and minimums; symmetries; end behavior; and periodicity.*
HSF.IF.B.5: Relate the domain of a function to its graph and, where applicable, to the quantitative
relationship it describes. For example, if the function h(n) gives the number of person-hours it takes
to assemble n engines in a factory, then the positive integers would be an appropriate domain for the
function.
HSF.IF.C.7.D: Graph rational functions, identifying zeros and asymptotes when suitable
factorizations are available, and showing end behavior.

Unit Outcome:
Simplify rational expressions.
Graph rational functions.
Identify graphs and equations as different types of functions.

Lesson Outcomes:
TLW identify graphs as different types of functions.
TLW identify equations as different types of functions.

Rationale/Purpose for Lesson:

The purpose of this lesson is to show the students how to graph rational expressions. Rational
expressions, functions, and equations can be used to solve problems involving mixtures, electricity,
medicine and travel. I will show them how to add and subtract rational expressions by finding the
least common multiple of the polynomials to determine the common denominator.

Assessment:
I will frequently ask my students if they are understanding the material. This will determine if I need
to go slower or faster in my instruction. I will later assign a homework assignment to see how well
they can simplify the rational expressions.

Resources/Materials Required:
Note Packets
Pen/Pencil
Homework assignment

Stratton 2

Introduction:
I will start the class by taking attendance. In the morning we have the Pledge of Allegiance, so I
have a couple of minutes to do attendance. I will also have a couple of warm-up questions on the
board. I will then ask for any questions on the homework assignment from yesterday.

Procedures: (55 minute class)

0-10 minutes: Introduction
Attendance.
Housekeeping (Marking period is almost over, Deadlines)
Questions on homework.
Take out notes.
15-40 minutes: Classifying Functions Notes
Start with an equation.
Graph the equation.
State the domain and range.
40-55 minutes: Homework
I will pass out the homework.
They will have the next 15 minutes to ask questions and finish the assignment.

Guided Study: They now have their note packet to refer back to. They can use this to help them
through he homework problems.

Homework: (when appropriate)

I will assign a worksheet for them to practice classifying rational functions.

Closure:
I will ask if they have any questions on the lesson or about the homework.
