OBJECTIVES:
1. (Behavioral) By the end of the unit, students will be able to identify the 7 themes in Peter and
the Wolf.
2. (Cognitive) By the end of the unit, students will explain the definition of a theme.
3. (Experiential) By the end of the unit, students will listen to the Prokofievs Peter and the Wolf.
4. (Critical) By the end of the unit, students will extend their understanding the relationship
between the story of Peter and the Wolf and its themes.

Identifying Theme

National:

Lesson One 4/14 -4/22:


Im starting an orchestra (add percussion)
o Students will select an instrument from the container as the walk in
the door.
o Teacher will review and introduce the names of the percussion
family instruments off of the green cards.
Teacher will read story of Peter and the Wolf
Introduce Peter; Grandfather; Duck; and Cat Themes
o Teacher will introduce the word Theme and define it as:
o Take 8 to make a circle
o Students will listen to Peters theme, which is played by the string
family. Students will practice skipping to Peters theme in the circle.
o Students will listen to Grandfathers theme, which is played by the
bassoon) and move to it like an old man in the circle.
o Students will listen to Ducks Theme, which is played by an oboe,
and will move to it like a duck.
o Students will listen to the Cats Theme, which is played by the
clarinet, and can be confused for the Ducks theme. They will move
around in a circle listening to the Cats theme.
o The teacher will play the themes in any order, and may repeat, and
students will identify and move like that animal/person in the circle
when they hear the theme.
Listen to first portion of Peter and the Wolf
o Ever time students hear the Peter theme, the Grandfather theme, the
Duck theme or the Cat theme, they will put that manipulative up in
the air.
Lesson Two 4/23 -4/30:
Im starting an orchestra (instrument review)
Review Peter; Grandfather; Duck; and Cat
o Take 8
o Review definition of Theme
o Review Character and Instrument of each theme and have students
move around the circle like that character.
Introduce Bird; Wolf; and Hunter
o Introduce the Birds theme, which is played by the flute, have
students fly like a bird while listening to the theme.
o Introduce the Wolf Theme, which is played by the French Horn, and
have students move around the circle like a wolf listening to the
theme.
o Introduce the Hunters theme, which is played by the Timpani,

o Students will match the animal to the instrument that plays its theme
o Students will listen to the six themes and identify which animal they
belong to.
