performing it in the middle of spoken rhythms and performing it on bared instruments

Create your birthday month rhythm
Peach, Pear, Apple, Plum
Final performance on Bared instruments.

Activity 1

Echo Clapping
Have students echo back:
o Ta Ta Ti Ti Ta
o Syn-co-pah
o Ti Ti Ta Ti Ti Ta
Have students echo back with out mnemonics:
o Ta Ta Ti Ti Ta
o Syn-co-pah
o Ti Ti Ta Ti Ti Ta

Activity 2

Ask: Who here has a birthday?


We are going to create rhythms using our birthday month. For instance if
my birthday was in January , First I would figure out how many beats my
month has . Jan-u-a-ry, then I would come with a rhythm for those claps.
For example
Break students up according to birthday
o Rules for Group Work:
! Everyones opinion is important, so let everyone speak.
! Majority Rules
! You will have one minute, when I ring the bell, voices
off, and sit quietly with your group.
o Split by birthday month, merge any group with one student with
smaller sized groups, give each month a card.
o Once time is up, ring the bell and have each group clap and say
their month and have class echo it back.

State: 1.3.5.B.1; 1.3.5.B.4



MATERIALS:
Rhythm on white board
Bared Instruments
Canon definition on board.

Assessment:
Teacher will assess small groups for
appropriate application of rhythm
to their birth month.
Teacher will assess for proper Orff
instrument playing technique.

Activity 3:

Echo Me: ||:Peach, Pear, Apple, Plum, When does your birthday come?

Why did I say that twice? (Repeat sign)
What is the rhythm associated with When does your; syncopah, like
Drinking Gourd from the spoken word.
Say it one more time, clap and say, think and clap
Lets do it as a canon, which is like a round. A canon is when two or more
groups play the same thing but start at different times.
Students: Part 1, Teacher Part 2.
Split class in half, do canon again.

Activity 4:

Carefully and without stepping over the instruments, sit but do not play
an instrument.
Review wood vs metal bared instruments; If you think the Xylophone is a
metal instrument put your hand on your head (Ect).
Perform canon Wood Bars: Part 1; Metal Bars Part 2; switch; class vote on
which one will start for final performance.
Each group practices saying their month rhythm and clapping their sticks
together
Perform final product; alternating canon and 3 months.
